Raced my WB Pred against another WB Pred
#1
Hello all,
I spent the last 2 days at Glamis and I still haven't unpacked the sand from my ears! I thoroughly thrashed the Predator on the dunes for the 6th time since purchasing and still no problems, even the many stints at the MX track and some hard desert riding haven’t bent or broken a thing. Two huge thumbs up to the Polaris team for the great R&D that made such a solid first sport quad.
I spent several hours racing other quads at Oldsmobile hill and I even got to run against another Predator that had the WB slip on with stock airbox and jetting. I was very surprised when I took this WB Pred by a good 5 or 6 bike lengths every time. Just for comparison, My Predator was consistently beating full piped and jetted Raptors (Yoshi and Alba racing full setups) by 2 to 3 bike lengths by the top. Even coming from behind after getting sloppy in the whoops, I could pull and pass these Raptors by the time I hit the top. There was one Raptor that was very close a couple of times, but he left before I could ask about his setup. I did suck some roost against some modded banshees and some heavily modded 250Rs. I was about dead even with a Toomey T5 piped Banshee. Piped Z400s were about 8 or 9 lengths back.
For those of you who say no airbox mods or jetting changes are needed with the WB slip-on I tell don’t believe it -take the challenge and use the K&N, rejet to a 160 main and drill 12 1” UNI vents. Without re-jetting and opening up the airbox, you’re not going to see the full potential of the WB pipe. I raced the other Pred 4 times just to make sure I wasn’t getting a lucky launch. –Same results! A little unhappy with the race, he stops to see what I’d done to mine. The guys on the Raptors were pulling up to let me know my quad had a set of *****. I was loving it! This was the first trip to Glamis after going back to the 14 tooth front sprocket and the gearing was dead on for 3rd gear up Oldsmobile hill. With the 13 tooth, I’d hit rev limiter in 3rd and bog bad in 4th. I couldn’t be happier with how my Predator is set up right now.
Was anybody from the forums out at Glamis this weekend with their Predator? I saw a few of them. No TLs though

what paddles were you running? did you still use the 37 rear sprocket?
my experience with a CLAMPON K&N filter : it is slower than the stock airbox setup. I even jetted up to 200 with the clamp on filter trying to get some more power.
you say get the K&N that goes in the airbox then install 12 of the uni air vents and jet it to 160.
i have the 160 in mine with the stock airbox and a gutted silencer. the needle is in the stock position.....with the 40 degree temps here in oklahoma i am jetted about perfect.
congradulations on the victories! i had a few victories myself this weekend.

vilnrk,
Glad to hear you took some scalps too.
I'm running the Skat-Track Edge 4 plys. I have STOCK gearing. With all the extra mid-range power the quad pulls really well. If I was stock, I'd stay with the 13 tooth front for sure but I'd say stock gearing or maybe going up one in the rear with the WB Silencer would be perfect. My spark plug says the jetting is right on at 160. I don't know about jetting with the K&N clamp-on and the gutted silencer. I expect there might be a back-pressure issue with the gutted exhaust that might cost a couple ponies compared to a WB setup. My quads power was noticeably more powerful with the WB pipe, 155 main jet and stock air-box. When I put in the 12 vents and jetted to a 160 main, I gained even more power. The quad has hard hitting mid-range power that builds until the rev limiter. It's truly a blast to ride!

Ken,
I'm running the "out-of-box" setup with 8 or 9 rings depending on how you count. I'm not running the quiet core. However, it's noticebly quieter than my 400ex with 13 disks.

Hey Thump,
Good to hear your positive results. I know this thing is capable of a lot more than it's been giving me so far. I think the W/B pipe is a big part of the issue, with the large diameter head pipes and low back pressure. I have had many problems getting it jetted just right, but the closest I had it to perfection, with the stock airbox, was with a 157.5 main, stock needle on the 3rd clip, and the snorkel (and rubber grommet) removed from the airbox, the drop in K&N panel filter, and 6 discs in the W/B. It flat out flew, and easily lofted the front wheels thru 3rd gear...
BUUUUTTTTT, I got worried about sand getting in the airbox through the snorkel hole, so I rigged an outer wear on the snorkel grommet, and put the stock foam pre-filter back in. Well, it ran like crap then. I haven't messed with it again until now. I am about to try a new Dynojet kit, which has a stage III offering, along with a clamp-on K&N RU-1770. I'll post my results later this week for everyone. If that set-up doesn't do well, I'm going back to a set-up like yours, with the airbox cut for breathing...and a 160 or so main....
Thanks for posting your results, it really helps those of us trying to get it right....
When are you going to Olds again....If I'm running well this week, I'll be there on Saturday the 1st of March...Send me a PM if you are going...
Thanks,
JJ

JJ,
Just to let you know, I'm running on the 3rd clip also (stock position) I can run with or without the stock foam prefilter and the power seems to be about the same. I tried it without the foam prefilter this last trip to see if it made a big difference -there wasn't much if any. I'd say it would be a good idea to run the prefilter or cover the airbox vents with the K&N outerwear. I'll let you know if I can make it out to Glamis for some friendly Predator duels. Good luck with the clamp on and let us know how it goes.
See ya!

hello thumper400ex hey you wouldnt by chance have any pics of your airbox with the 12 holes?
It sounds to me like your setup exactly like raths pred except he cut a 2x3 inch hole in back and you have 12 airvents. seems the best way to go all around to me.......

Hey everyone,
Well, I just got home from work and got the K&N kit installed. It has a beautifully tapered needle, with six (6) slots for more adjustability...The stage III set up called for a 170 DJ jet, and the clip in the 2nd slot from the top for elevations below 3000'. The DJ jets ARE DIFFERENT than standard Mikuni jets. But they did include about 10-12 of them...which is good. The instructions also call for a high performance exhaust system, for both the stage I and III set ups. I'm going to try my W/B with 8 discs and the USFS plate installed to start.
So, I'm all set up that way, and ready to fire it up and test it this Friday. I would show you how trick it looks, but I forgot my digital at work. If you want to see what it looks like, you can check out Heapster's photo gallery. I'm sure he won't mind. I already have the stock airbox out, and I'm ready to start working on it if the slip on doesn't work well...
The underseat fit is close, but does to appear to be a problem. Hell, it can't be any worse than the stock seat tool kit hook gouging the top of the airbox! Really, it appears that it could take a good hard hit on the seat, and cause less, if any damage at all, than the stock plenum tube, since the K&N would flex quite a bit...and the stock plenum might not...time will tell, and hopefully, I won't make any hard landings with that part of my anatomy on the seat!
I spoke to the staff at K&N today, since Dyno Jet tested the stage III kit with a different slip-on than what I have. They used a K&N SN-2550 slip-on, which is a tapered conical filter with a 20 deg. angle mount. I was concerned about the volume and flow being very different than my round RU-1770 slip-on with 20 deg. angle mount (both are 6" long, mine is 3 3/4" dia., and the tapered one is 4 1/4" down to 3 and ??something".....However, when they compared the flow volumes, the RU-1770 flows 425 CFM, and the SN-2550 flows about 396 CFM. With my outerwear on the 1770, and the resulting 5% flow loss, I should be right at the same flow rate, +/- a few CFM.
Another note...I found a new set of carb screws to replace the VERY SOFT Mikuni factory ones, that were getting pretty messed up from all my recent adjustment efforts. Even with good tools, it was easy to mess up those screws. I found some hex head screws that are very solid and look great. If anyone wants the details, PM me and I'll send you the numbers...they're all available at your local NAPA parts store.
All this anticipation to get this quad to this point and I'm too nervous to even start it up and run it. Really, it's too late to do so here in my gated community. I would probably have a petition circulated against me if I ran it up now!
Sorry for the long post, probably just nervous, and frustrated...
Anyway, I'll post results later,
Take care,
JJ
