Stock 650P vs Mod 650P drag racing!
#1
At OK. Little Sahara Sand Dunes a 650P with Big Gun Exhaust, K&N filter with Dyno Jet Kit, Air box mod, Red ft spring, Black rear spring, and ATR radial tires on Douglas wheels. Sounded so good, I mean so good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
But....................Drag racing or running the dunes...............He couldn't say up with me!!!!!!!!!!
On the drag race he would jump me off the line real good, shortly after I would pass him and stay in front and win by 3-4 quad lengths. I asked to ride his and he ride mine and race, but he passed.
In the dunes I out powered him everywhere we went.............................................. ..............!
Top speed in sand was 61 mph after about 1/2 mile, He was running 55 mph.
Drag racing on the course I'll hit 53 on a good run, He said 47-49 mph.
But his 650P sure sounds so GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My 650P was stock at the time with a squalling belt with 1300 miles on it.
We both ran in 4x4 mode with yellow lever pulled..............is it the quad or the 44 yr. old rider that spanked him so bad?????

Howdy,
I have a 2002 P650 with mods. I ran a friends 2003 P650 for about a quarter mile down a dirt road. He could beat me by a little. I think that the 2003s are quicker than the 2002s. Have a goodun!!

Congrats on the race! People mod everything, but their clutch.
The clutches are dail in when they come from the factory, but as soon as you make any changes to the bike, they are not.

Good job Prairietwin, of course it was the rider, hehe. Actually I hear versions of this same thing all the time, on sleds, atv's and bikes too. Somebody's big mean mod gets embarrased by a stock machine. "Sounds faster", isn't necessarily faster and sometimes "feel faster" isn't either. Think your competitor had too many mods to be dialed in without a LOT of homework. The true test of fast is comparison with another.

It was stated a long time ago that to do engine mods without doing clutch mods is a waste of time, and I totally agree. I agree with dzzy, that guy probably doesn't have all his mods dialed in. You can't slap all this bolt on stuff on your bike and expect it to perform like the box says it will. You have to fine tune everything in order to get all the power out of your mods, including your clutch. A guy I know has changed the weights in his clutch down from the stock 60?grams to 50 grams. His bottom end and midrange are way better. Mods are like sex: a little change every time nets big rewards in the end

I agree with the tuning aspect; I raced stock Prairies after doing mods and could do no better than ties or even getting beaten slightly. When I finally got it dialed in I could then take a stock 650 convincingly, but it took alot of tweaking to get to that point.

Prairie v twin do you have stock tires and wheels?
I think weight of the tires and rims would be a big issue here. Did he have over size tires like 27 or 28" tires on his douglas wheels?
Did the guy you rode with have a winch?
Large tires with aftermarket rims can make a huge weight difference, over 25 + lbs per tire in some cases. Since the bike has to turn all this extra weight at all times.
Also you were riding in the sand where small light bikes really excel.
I have all the mods on my signiture but stock rims and 25 inch tires. I have a buddy who has a bone stock 2002 prairie. We have not raced them yet, but he rode mine today, and he thought my bike was a lot quicker than his, more immediate power, when he rode it. He is going to do the same mods I have. I think the main difference was the black spring and airbox lid hole.
I also have a winch and he does not. So I am probably at leat 50 lbs heavier than him, (winch and tires)
We are going to race them tomorrow I will let you know what happend.
I am not disputing you or anything like that but I was just curoius about the weight factor. Maybe a 2003 is just faster out of the box.
I am sure that the 2002 that my friend has would probably have a couple of more MPH on the very top end. I think the winch seem slows the bike down a coupe of MPH on top. But on acceleration and general riding mine is quicker.

PrairieTwin,
You have a true insight to modds, stock versus modded machine, modded machine sounds powerful but doesn't have the umphf to go. The only thing this guy did that was helpful was the black spring that is where he got the jump on you. Your stock jets are the reason plus the stock wheels and tires that you caught up to him and eventually passed him. I revamped my machine some time ago and it sure sounded good but a stock kawi kicked my butt not to mention a 700 Polaris, I went home with my tail between my legs and asked why did this happen. I thought I should do some homework and so I found out by exhaustive testing and many hours playing around that you have to get rid of those Dyno Jet jets work on the intake and clutch. I have done so much to my quad I would put it up against any other quad out there and that goes for Mickey Dunlaps 800, I know I would give him a good run. The best thing to do is look at what you have and ask what can I do to improve on the initial design. The hint I am giving you is the design just improve on it. You have to make it breath, put some fuel into it and put the power to the ground. All the ***** in world don't mean spit if you can't move as fast as the tires. What this quad is known for is it's torque all you have to do is improve on it and it can be simple or exstremely exspensive. Check through all the modds people have done, try one at time for yourself, take notes so you can refer back now and gain just to see if what you have done is help or a hindrance. This probably dosen't help much but I have helped a few people with their machines.
The best thing is we have the most powerful quad around with a few add ons or take offs we can give this baby that ball grabbin head snappin kind of horsepower.

I FINALLY got my choke spring in yesterday. Managed to free up enough time today to put all my mods together. I've got the 142-145 jet setup. My needles are shimmed 40/1000 of an inch. My exhaust is modded and my custom intake snorkle is on. I need to drill some holes in the airbox lid and tweak my airscrews (need to get a smaller screwdriver). I notice a faster takeoff and more top speed----overall more power. I took it for a rip up the road beside my house. 96kmh but ran out of room so I don't know what the top speed is now. I can see it getting a little quicker with the airbox mods and airscrews adjusted. When the money allows, I wanna get the ramp weights. I also have the black spring installed in my driven clutch.
