performance mods. for SP335
#2
rjohns - I've asked the same question in the past on this and other forums, and also of my dealer. While I haven't done any of these mods yet (waiting for the warranty to expire), the consensus is this: first, go to lighter clutch springs (various companies make clutch kits), this clutch modification doesn't boost HP but it changes the engagement RPM and boosts performance. I think the next thing to do would be to change the air filter, rejet the carb and add aftermarket, highflow exhaust. Highlifter sells all of these components as a package and some people have had good results. (They review this package on a Foreman here at atvconnection.)
My guess is the filter/carb/exhaust mod will add 3-5 hp and the clutch kit will make better use of the power. You still won't have a Scrambler on your hands but it should improve the performance quite a bit.
Let us know how it works out ..

I just talked to Dan at Highlifter about the kit they have , he was saying the 335 is severly starved for air. The kit would improve some of the problem and to expect an 18-22% increase in power. Well like you said 4-5 hp. That may be a substantial gain in a bike that has only 22hp, but its $412 . I'm leaning toward the kit and will keep you posted.

rjohns - please do keep me posted because I will likely make some mods myself. Dan's comments about it being starved for air are interesting ... I added a K&N filter to mine because I trashed the stock one .. and I can't say as I've noticed a difference. I've always thought that more air doesn't do you any good without more fuel and the ability to get rid of it faster (high flow exhaust) ... was Dan suggesting it runs a little lean stock? I wonder if some holes in the air breather box would help get more air to it. Don't forget about the clutch springs, I've heard that makes a huge difference in all Polaris's although, it doesn't really boost horsepower, just improves the way it is used. Anyway, 22 HP for a 335 cc motor is not very much, they must have these things severely de-tuned. Let me know as you add things and what you think. - Brad

Dan at Highlifter was telling me they make extra breather tubes for some other brands. The tube on these models must be a little small.(Polaris). Dan said that there is not enough room for an additional tube, but if you never ride in mud or water you can take the lid off of the air box.(NOT) !!! Of course every thing you do to improve air flow requires rejetting.

You're right ... that was a useless post ... plenty of guys modding out SP500s too. Problem is, most guys can never get enough power and end up modding anything they have. Nothing wrong with getting the most out of what you've got.

I found just what just what I was looking for at highlifter.com. They have a couple of 335 owners that used the mods we were thinking about. I e-mailed jason at jasonkass@uswest.net. he said the mods were well worth the money. He also has 26in rear tires and 25 in fronts with no trouble. Go check out Highlifters forum.
