Default Questions for Modquad,Bubba,Rick.

Ok guys here's the deal, got my scrammy all apart for it's winter cleaning, just the plastics and clutches, and it's still too cold to get it outside for a little washing without the plastics on,still -40C here. The deal is I keep hearing a little voice saying "Your halfway there, your halfway there".
Have any of you thought about deporting the intake? (MototuneUSA) If you knock it down to 65% of original size it's supposed to give 5 to 10% increase in power(Bernoulis[?] principle, increases velocity and all that). Not sure about the numbers but around there.I have the tools all I gotta buy is the JB weld(shudder, as a welder that stuff gives me nightmares, but apparently it works)
Can I drop a Wiseco or any other high perf. piston in without honing or boring the cyl?
Should I do the pipe, clutch mods after doing the piston? My guess would be yes, but hey it never hurts to ask.

On another note a buddy's got a nice little milling machine sitting in his garage.(NO NO STAY AWAY FROM IT) Anybody for a close shave?

None of us with the 400's would even think of down sizing the intake ports on those, they are too restricted in stock form as it is. It is definitely a rule that a smaller venturi equals faster flow, which will give better low end response and torque, but usually a sacrifice of top end is going to be apparent due to volume decrease. I dont believe that it would benefit you enough to even try it. lots of R&D has been given to develope these to be good all around, and if you start adding JB weld and welding, you might do a lot of work for little or no results. Anytime a wiseco piston is installed the clearance has to be checked. Most of them set at a little wider clearance than the stock cast ones, and the box should be marked with the correct clrearance specs. As far as shaving the head? A little compression bump would never hurt anything, even if it's just to make sure the head is nice and flat. The best thing you could do is remove the valves and clean up any casting flash or "goombas" in the runners and polish the exhaust out nice and slick, carbon wont stick to it if it's slick. Hope that might help,Bubba

Gotta agree, air, give it air! Don't take it away. You like Bubba suggested check clearances. Whenever you take the time to break it down, it's always best to do what you can to "freshen" or square things up. You can send the piston (wiseco) along with the cylinder, so the machinist can match them up. Don't cut corners. There are tried and true performance gaines with this motor. You're not gonna re-invent the wheel. Put a little $$$ into it, it will pay you back in full the first time you spueeze the throttle.
