Default 650 - Hesitation & Consistent Dieing at idle

Hey Guys,

Had a new problem develope over the last month. We have had a far amount of snowfall lately, so I have been plowing quite a bit. Around a month ago I noticed while riding around that I was having slight hesitation at a steady throttle around 30 mph. At the same time I had to play with the idle adjustment to keep the 650 running at idle. Within the last two weeks with the idle turned all the way up, I can't keep the 650 running after letting of the gas.

I took it in on Saturday and they looked at it for a while. The exhaust emmisions told them a compression problem, so they did a compression check which turned out fine. They looked at the carbs and showed me, with filter off looking down at carbs, how both (needles?) were spitting gas at idle.

So now they are talking carb, valve and possible choke spring replacment. Any thoughts on this.

I have only 400 miles but 82 hours on my quad. I have defintely not abused it in any way. I think I have changed the oil and filter three times and the plugs once already.

Thanks for any help.

Have you had the choke spring mod done? Was a problem on some '02s. Sounds like your choke is partially engaged causing it to flood out.

I know it sounds simple but a fouled spark plug? Possibly a clog somewhere in the carbs? Sorry to hear of your probs. Is your jetting too lean?

From what I've read on here I think I'm running rich. It will idle while I'm warming it up but after it is warmed up it won't idle.

I'm betting on the choke cable.... You said it's been developing over the last month so bad gas is out of the question? This is also a very early symptom of bad needles in the carb but it should sputter and backfire bog out and die. I don't think it's a problem with 650 not heating up because it's always hot when you are plowing.

Yes, I had the same thought on the gas so I purposley ran it down to nearly emptied and filled it up with fresh gas from the pump. No change in symptoms.

I have a DJ Kit but wanted to wait for warmer weather to install it. If I have to readjust the carb now I might as well stick the new jets in. How much will the cold temperatures affect the performance this summer if I adjust everything now?

I would also say it was choke springs. When doing carb mods I noticed my front choke was sticking now I am just waiting for them to come in.

I think you should get your quad running right stock, before you start modifying it. Just my .02

Lightman I agree with you that way if it doesn't run right after the mods you know thatits something you did while modifiying it. I didn't relize mine was sticking it was just barely sticking and I don't think it was enough to bother but over time it would have got worse.

That sounds like the right thing to do, my only reason for doing everthing at once is the time & money incentives.

I also rechecked my original spark plugs and they were both definetley blackened at the tips. That is another indicator of excess fuel burning isn't it?
