Default Raptor One-Way check - how painful ?

How difficult is it to check the one-way for wear / abuse ? I just finished my 02 tranny conversion but didnt open up that side of the motor. Is it a quick job, or complicated ? Anything special I should know ? I havent consulted my trusty service manual but what is the general concensus of the level of pain ? It doesnt seem to be acting up but I'd rather check it for wear prior to a failure so I dont have any parts floating around my fresh engine.

Thanks, Eric

I haven't done it but I will when I do my tranny. If you decide to check it I was told to do it with the engine in the frame. Just going on how to do it, it doesn't sound like too bad of a job. I would if I were you.

You will most likely need a replacement gasket. The real problem is that it doesn't seem to break due to wear per se - just bad luck when your spring decides to break. I've already seem some 2003 people posting with failed one-ways.

Do a search or look through some of the other recent posts on the topic. It isn't difficult at all.

Default Raptor One-Way check - how painful ?

Finally got a chance to peek at the service manual - looks like the the area where the one-way is located is pretty much separated from the rest of motor (tranny, crank, etc...). Am I correct in assuming that if the one-way flies apart, the loose parts should be contained within that side of the motor ? Also, once the generator rotor nut is off I should be able to remove the one-way without having to pull the magneto rotor - correct ?

Have you guys heard of any serious collateral damage due to the one-way failure ?

Thanks, Eric

You cant just check it like that. You have to split your case. You would be better off just replacing it before it goes out. I just had mine replaced with '02 gears. I also had a JE piston 11:1 put in. Haven't rode it yet though.

K&N air / oil filter
JE 11:1 piston

Ct,

Are you sure ? - we are talkin about the one-way bearing (starter clutch). I just converted the tranny to an 02 myself and that required splitting the cases but it seems the one-way is accseble behind the magneto cover (left side cover on motor) !?

Please clarify....

Just the left side has to come off, nothing like the tranny.

if the one-way flies apart it will make all kind of noise. I doubt it will its more or less "contained"

There is a small passage between the left side case (one-way) and center cases (tranny and crank).

007,

10-4, now that I think I have confidence in the tranny, I'm sorta waiting for the other shoe to fall as far as the one-way - if it aint one thing it's probably gonna be another

I'm just gonna ride hard and wait till I "hear" funny noises coming from that side of the motor....sounds like my new work wont be impacted if I open it up as soon as I start hearing bad noises related to the starter area - right ?

More than likely it will just plain stop working and start spinning free. Or like mine and keep working but make whining noises all day long.
