Drag Racing

I know this has been gone over before but I never get a straight answer I want gearing that is the best for drag racing I have 20' tires I see that most of you use 22, tires and a 15x42 gearing. I looked at the gearing calculator and see that with 20' tires 15x38 is close to your speeds. I start racing in second gear and I mostly race in grass and hard pac dirt I was wondering would I get better results with 15x38 or would I lose the race in the top end. Or should I go with 17x38 gearing to pull more out of each gear or would I lose in the top end or lastly should I just keep it with the 16x40 from the factory because that is the best. I'am sure someone from this forum has timed runs with different gearing to see what is best this is the most obsest group of guys on these forums. Help us newbies out and share some of your knowledge. Thanx

i run 20" tires and 15-42 on my wifes ds, and it rocks for what it has on the engine, makes her happy and raptors and banshees with that look of what just happenedazsand knows that look i'm talking about. here is the thing for you though that is for sand and on the hill we race on. she does ok on the flats but there is always people that can track her down.
for what you are doing i think dsmike could be the one that has the answers you want.
but i'll tell what i would start with. first i would go to 22"rear tires. and if you are racing a distance i would make several runs and figure out where the engine rpm is when i crossed the line. well i would like to be in the range of maxed out as i crossed the line, thus i feel the engine would have been at it's strongest pull. not maxed out all the way but ready to shift.
next if you are just play racing i have found in the sand with high gearing that on a stock quad sometimes you can go faster in 4 th than fifth the engine won't pull it. so that is where i take the time and find the gearing that will allow the engine to reach max rpm in fifth. this seems to work for me but i mainly race sand hilss and that is a matter of the start for us, good luck hope you find that sweet spot on the gearing for where you ride.

i was running a 23" tires with 18-41 gearing and you can ask anyone from the Oklahoma dunes that my bike leaves very hard and has unlimited top end speed.
sometimes i run a 14-46 and the bike seems to still not ever run out of gear. i only run the big gearing to only use the bottom 3 gears(1-3) and to run 1/8 mile tracks.
