Default Mods without rejetting??

With a budget of $1,000 (no more) what are the best mods i can do to make my 400EX rip, but without the pain of finding the right jets? Dont worry about suspension, i am looking at speed for now.
any comments greatly apreciated. Thanks

About nothing. Anything you do that will increase power and performance will require some re-jetting. Especially if you are spending 1,000.00 on it. You will have to re-jet. Only way around it is to have someone do the mods for you and set-up your jetting for you. To increase speed you need more flow and more flow means you need more gas to go with the flow. If you do not want to re-jet I would have someone do it for you or you will be re-building that motor quickly and then you will be over your 1,000.00 budget. Let me add, this is motor mods. You could do some gearing changes that would give minimal results, but your money would be better spent on the motor for more speed.

same thing NCScramble said. You MUST re-jet. It's really not that bad. the part that is the biggest pain, though is adjusting the d@mn fuel screw. If you lived closer to me up here in ohio, I'd do it for you-for a small price, of course. Best mods depend on how you ride it. I'd reccomend a complete big gun exhaust because it offers adaptability. If you want to ride moto, its a full-on race pipe. If you want to ride woods, you can buy the quiet core to tone the sound down. Put the cam from an XR400 in the top end. Use a twin-air or UNI air filter ( I don't like K&N filters cuz they let more dirt in, and they are harder to clean). Buy a 5 pack of main jets, and on the first try, choose a jet that is midway in between what you have now, and the richest one you have(biggest #). Get a pilot jet of about #45 and put that in while you have the float bowl off. If you find that your main jet is too big/small, you don't have to take the float bowl off to change it. Just loosen the carb form the airbox, and intake, then twist it out so the bottom is out. Take the plug out of the bottom of the bowl, and your main is right there. change it out regarding lean/rich.
