Who has the Autometer tach on their pred?

Yes I want to get one for my Predator. What model # or what type do you need? I would like to get one of the smaller ones.....I do not think a 5" tach would be very adaptable........Pretty but not adaptable. LOL.

I too want a smaller one. Doesnt have to be Autometer..i just like the sweeping tach vs the digital display. But i've heard the auto ones dont work on the 4strokes, but how does the DS650 use one?

HPD used to market the VDO tach. Nice small face, and very reliable. As of last week, they had a couple in stock. Along with my Trail Tech gear, it's been through a war, and not missed a beat.

Hi everyone,
It was me that installed an Autometer tach on my Pred... I tried posting the photos on this site and they wouldn't take,,,so I gave up and posted them on another forum. You can see the setup I have at PredatorOwners.com, on my member page..."JJGI5150"
You really need that tach to know to shift at exactly 8000 rpm...that's when the motor starts dropping power anyway...but it does want to rev...!!!! It was an easy install, it works really good, and it takes away all the guessing about when the "Predator Popping" starts. My motor runs absolutely great...I have a Dynojet jet kit with stage III settings...a 175 DJ main jet, a DJ needle on the 2nd clip from the top, a Mikuni # 50 pilot jet, and a slip-on K&N RU-1770 filter with outerwear (those photos are on this sites member page). I mean this motor really screams...I can literally leap from whoop to whoop and from banked berm to opposite banked berm...I really love this machine...BUT, only if I keep it down below the magic # on my motor...which is 8500 rpm...
At that point, the factory CDI piece of crap starts a soft timing retard, and then ends up with a major "Popping" episode above 8500 up to 8800 rpm. The motor does this with the stock exhaust, but is very difficult to hear then, and it does it much worse with an OPEN exhaust like the W/B slip on. For such a long time I though it was just me, who somehow had mysteriously forgotten how to jet carbs...but after extensive effort, and lost sleep, and finally talking to enough of the right people, I now know that many Predators have a poorly regulated, designed, and/or intentionally early set rev limiter (probably the latter so Polaris doesn't have a lot of inexperienced riders blow up a first year intro motor...not good press!).
I will be replacing my CDI as soon as one is available....should be about 2-3 months from two different sources...
Good luck to you all...
Hope this helped....

One thing to keep in mind, there is probably a +/- level of accuracy of that tach, almost any tach for that matter. In other words, that's the rev-limiter you're hitting.

Ok..so why does that tach work, but alot of people say normal car tachs wont? What is that tach for..a 4/6/8 cyl car? I dont want somthing that big..maybe 2", but if i cant wire it up..then the hell with it.

Hi again everyone,
I agree that a slightly smaller tach might be OK, but I have found that the Predator motor revs so quickly with the 38 tooth rear sprocket, that you really need something that is easy to see!!!! while bouncing over whoops, diving down a dune face, and a ton of other things I do while riding...In short, the size of the 3 3/4" Autometer ended up being a PLUS for me, even though I was not so sure about it at first. Might have something to do with aging eyes.
I was at Glamis Dunes yesterday, and everyone who saw the tach thought it looked prety good. I was able to really enjoy the Predator for the first time since I've had it. Knowing when to shift and avoid the rev limiter made the quad immensly more enjoyable. I rode so much that my entire body aches from all the youngster antics I tried in the dunes...
I will be changing to a better exhaust from Yoshimura soon, and changing this piece of crap CDI as soon as possible, too. Otherwise, I am very pleased with my Predator....for now....
Take Care,
JJ
