Is it my clutch or ?

My recent problem becomes annoying. My quad will idle in neutral but you have to jam it into gear and hit the thottle to get going or it will die. I turned the idle up but now it moves when idleing in gear because the clutch engages any less and it dies. If you stop on a hill and have to switch gears good luck it won't. I took the clutch case off and that looks normal any ideas

I would check your throttle cable adjustment at the throttle assembly. If you are having to jam it in gear, it is idling way to fast. Back your idle screw on the carb out some, then check for proper free play at the thumb lever. You should have 1/16 of an inch freeplay at the tip of the throttle lever before your engine speed increases. To adjust at the throttle slide the boot back, loosen the jam nut and turn the nut in or out depending on what you need. I know It sounds crazy, but you can have your idle off so far that it will cut out and die. Try this and come back with results. Another reason I believe this to be the problem is because you said you increased the idle a little bit and it creeps, that is a problem with a high idle or out of adjustment idle. Creeping can be caused by other things, so If this doesn't work, let me know.

Take the belt cover off where you can watch the pulleys work.Look at the front one and be sure that it is releaseing all the way.I had this happen to me the bushings in the front clutch were hanging up not letting it release all the way.At idle your belt shouldnt be turnning.Your belt could also be bad.

It seems like the front pulley isn't releasing al the way. Almost seems like the shaft has got alittle rust on it so it holds it abit. Water and dirt at some point got in there. Alittle mud in the low spots also falls off if I hit it with my hand. If I manually pull the clutch out it and start it, put it in gear it's Ok but shift it to neutral and then back in gear and it creeps along because the pulley has now moved in and not back out. I think I'll pull it off and clean the shaft and see how it is. Do you think a diiferent spring would help?

Guess i guessed wrong. I would check everything for free movement after a full cleaning. Make sure the torque transfer buttons are clean. (These are the ones that you will see inside the clutch that slide along the edges of the inner assy) Make sure your weights are free to move and not binding. (these are the kidney shaped things inside the clutch) Look at the spring good and make sure it looks like it is in good shape. I doubt the spring is worn out so soon, but it could happen. If after proper cleaning and all the checks, it still doesn't want to move good, you will have to take it to your dealer and have them take the spider off and check things from there. Here is a good link on properly cleaning your clutch. cleaning Hope this helps you out.

After checking the front pulley and cleaning the shaft. After adjusting the thottle linkage for free play it still did the same so I looked at the belt alittle better and decided to turn it around because it seemed to be alittle frad by the grooves and it has stopped creeping along and is easier to shift now. Guess I'll get another belt.

Well, that is good news to hear. The reason it is working turned around the other way is becasue the sheaves are two different angles, so where it was worn before is now contacting on both sides. I would not run it long this way though as it could possibly damage the clutch sheaves, this is why they recommend marking your belt for rotation before removing it. Come to think of it, is this the first time you have had your belt off?? Maybe when you put it back on you did it backwards and caused the creeping, of course a dirty clutch doesn't help either. I would still get a new belt. HPD sells some good ones, better than the factory.

Thanks for the help It was the first time off with the belt and I did originally put it back on the same way. But one of those weird things came over me to try it backwards and see and it worked. So I do need a belt. Unfortunally, this coming week with the kids off for spring break were going north to Hayward area to ride so I'll look on ebay for a spare but this one I'll have to go get
Thanks
