don't let recoil backup sell you on a quad

my cousin lost his 99' sportsman 500 off a trailer, he let it sit in the barn a couple months and had to pull start it, battery was that dead, because it was so dead it blew his speedometer, to much volts being put out by the generator is all we could say. SO now I'm thinking, why by a 500ho for the recoil when it will just cost you $210 to do it for the new speedometor??? I'm leaning more towards one of those Twins every day.

That recoil starter could save you a** on the trail. Enough said to convince me. Anyways, how did the recoil cause the speedometer to blow out? I don't see where you figure that. If the battery died on a Sportsman 700 and you had to get it jumped to get it home, that could blow out some electrical components too.

I wouldn't think it is possible to damage anything with a dead battery installed. Now if it is removed or not connected good, that is another story, but they warn you about that in the manual,so.... I would think that if the voltage was too high and had to go somewhere it would trip the circuit breakers first??? I have ran with a dead battery a few times and had no problems whatsoever. And the backup start is a blessing for those times your battery goes dead.

THe only way a pull start will blow bulbs is if the battry has a direct short in it or is unhooked.

The batteries will fail to an open circuit just like the battery was disconnected, system voltage will rise to over 20 volts and components, bulbs will fail. I have had two batteries do this but only burnt out bulbs, nothing else. If you have a dead battery you would be wise to check system voltage immediately after starting, if it's over 16 volts shut it down and get a new battery otherwise it gets expensive...

Let me get this straight... It fell off the trailer going down the road? And you think it was the pull start that killed the spedo? How did it fall off the trailer and how much damage did it do? No offence but maybe it could have been damaged in the crash.

My Polaris has a pull start and I have had to use it many times because for some reason my quad sucks up the power of the battery. Unfortuanately i snapped the cord and now twice i have had to leave it outside because i cant get it started.

kblack i have a used spedo that works perfectly fine. The only thing wrong with it is the aluminum surround has a dent in it. It will mount in and sit there perfectly. Lemme know if your interested.
