1991 250x, cobra pipe, k&n air filter, jetted.

I just bought this bike last week. Ran great over the weekend and then last night it quit, just died. I have heard of the electronic ignition stuff getting to hot and stopping. However I was able to kick start it and it would run as long as I kept up the RPM's. As soon as you let it try to idle it would sputter and die. Several guys had been riding the 250x about 3 hours, the bike had been warm for quite a while. To make things more interesting I went to check the spark plug and the wire pulled right out of the boot. Go on to the next post.

Okay, Now I've been home to replace the sparkplug boot (cap). Now the Bike will idle, but when given gas it dies. I also had a new spark plug, so I replaced it and the old one didn't look fouled, but I replaced it anyway. Same thing, it will idle, but not very smoothly. When given gas it dies. I am not the world's greatest small engine repair man, but I can usually get em to run. I'll take all advice and try anything to get it to work. Oh and I cleaned the filter between attempts to no avail.

Try adjusting your idle speed. There is a little screw by the carb to do it, this may or may not help.
Also maybe try cleaning the carb, checking the float thing, re-jetting, basically check into the carb being the problem.

So where is the fuel filter on a 250x? This feels like a fuel delivery problem there more I work on it.

ive had one that died just like that, but it didnt start because it wasnt in the plug or anywhere in the electrical.it could be blown up but im not sure.by the way the fuel filter should be bolted on right below the tank,im pretty sure

The easiest thing to check is the fuel filter, it could be partially clogged not allowing gas to flow thru just trickle. Replace this it is a couple of dollars.

If this doesn't work then check the carb. Take the carb apart & clean, check to see if jets are clogged, let soak over night, reassemble.

Okay, So I'm a complete idiot. I got home last night and took the 250x completely apart. I have everything apart, everything. I have the carb off, I have the little valve covers off, I have the air box, you get the picture. Well then it occurs to me, you're not getting enough gas to the engine. So a pick up the gas tank and hold it at about the right angle. Turn the ON/OFF/RES switch to the ON position and low and behold nothing comes out. Switch to the RES position a gasoline, petrol, texas T, Black gold, fuel that is, came a gurgglin' out. So after repeating every four letter world I know silently in my head. I filled up the tank and turned the switch to the ON position and once again liquid poured from the right spot. I spent the next two hours putting the quad back together and now it runs better than ever. I least I am now complete familiar with dis and re-assembling my "new" toy. Told the wife, "Good news, I fixed the quad. Bad news, I shouldn't own a quad." Enjoy the laughs, but I know some of you have been there before.
