correct way to check oil in raptor
#1
I was under the impression that when checking your oil that you should warm your engine up first, turn it off, then let it cool for a few minutes then check, and when checking pull the dipstick out wipe it clean then without screwing it in, check your oil. A friend of mine informed me that you should check your oil when the engine is cool, and when checking screw the dipstick all the way in, pull out and check it that way. Which is the correct way? One of us is doing it wrong and I hope it isnt me.

I don't know the correct way but with the Raptor I always check it the next day or before I start the motor.
In the past when I have checked it warm it will read low when I have just put the correct amount in after an oil change.
So I prefer mine cold.
after the fact here with the raptor you do not screw the dipstick in!!!!!!!!

I could have used this info this past weekend! I was at the dunes and my raptor wasn't running quite right. I had an oil leakage problem just recently, so I thought it must be that. I rode back to the parking lot, shut the quad off, and checked the oil. There was NONE in the tank. I cleaned off the dipstick and put it back in, pulled it out and NOTHING. So I put in another quart of oil. This brought it up to the "correct" level. I rode around the parking lot a bit to get it warmed back up, then I checked the oil level without shutting the engine off. Big mistake! As soon as I unscrewed the dipstick oil sprayed everywhere. I thought that it was going to catch on fire when it sprayed on the hot header pipe, but it just smoked and stank the place up.
Come to find out that the oil level was originally ok, and that I had just added 1 quart too much. I MacGuyver'd up a little pump (a squeeze bottle and clear tubing) and sucked about 3/4 quart back out of the tank. It ran fine and measured perfectly the rest of the weekend. That sure was a pain in the a$$ experience for me, though!
