Default My experience installing Maier plastic on Raptor & N-style graphics

I purchased the silver set from Rocky Mountain ATV. The grill is redesigned in that it has larger openings and a built in protective screen.

The fit was excellent. I installed the back first and all the holes were pre-drilled. There are a couple of extra metal brackets you put into place to hold the upper back portion of the plastic. Then, you have to install two extra support brackets to the frame to provide additional support for the plastic tray where the battery fits into place.

The front was not predrilled for the fender bolts. I think this made the job easier and provided for a better fit since you could get it aligned exactly where you want it. There is a couple of brackets for installing the front plastic too.

Note: if you don't run with the stock headlamps, you will be able to see the lower corners of the radiator. It is the lower lip on the headlamps that covers this area. There is also a removable piece of plastic that allows access to the radiator cap.

I found it easiest to unbolt the handlebars to turn them sideways so the plastic could be lowered straight down over the quad. I am not sure you could put it into place without damaging the plastic if you left the handlebars in place. The plastic is too stiff to pull apart to wrap around the steering stem and gas tank area.

I have never seen the fullbore plastic so I can't do a direct comparison but I can say this is heavier and stronger than the stock plastic. It fits well and it comes at a great price. I think it was $280 which includes some expensive shipping charges.

As far as the graphics go, I can't imagine doing it without a $22 heat gun from Ace hardware. I also used a bottle of Gila stuff used to put on window tinting. You mix the $2 bottle with a quart of water and put it into a spray bottle. Actually, I only mixed up about 8 ounces of water. I had no trouble forming the graphics around the tank or under the seat area. All air bubbles and wrinkles came right out.

The seat cover was a little trickier. I started at the top and worked my way back. It mostly stretches into place more from side to side than front to back. I tried two different staple guns and couldn't get the staples to stick. I went to the hardware store and purchased 40 self tapping metal screws 1/4" long and some aluminum rivets also 1/4" long. I stretched the seat cover into place with the heat gun and then drilled a starter hole for the screws. The other reason I chose the screws was that the staple gun cannot get down into the crevice area where you really need to secure the seat cover. This way, you can remove the excess seat cover so it fits better when installed on the quad. Otherwise, the seat will fasten but it will not sit down on the plastic as flush as it could. I didn't end up using the rivets except for two just to see how it looked. The rivets look better but would be harder to get out if you wanted to change the cover later.

I thought the silver plastic and reddish/orange graphics would look good with the blue frame but I was wrong. I plan to paint the frame now in either gray, silver, or black, or maybe even powder coat it. Anyhow, here is a picture.

Edited later: Oh yea, start with the seat cover if you want your graphics to line up perfectly. Make sure the plastic is one the quad already too.

Looks good. Great review. 1 question, what about taking the seat to a upholstery shop ?? I took mine and had it done for $20. Just a suggestion.

MichaelAZ,

I was going to take it to an upholstery shop and it would be worth it for $20. I just got anxious having the graphics on and it was late Saturday. I needed to look cool for my 10 minute ride on Sunday before my engine whoas cropped up again forcing me to put the quad back on the trailer. I would highly recommend having a professional do it. I have a lot of patience and this even stressed me. Well, mostly the staple gun attempt. Once I switched to screws, all was well.

Looks good.....I installed a CEET seat sover on mine and and know where you are coming from on the installation. Anyways.....the plastic....price is reasonable, but I can't tell if thats the "shiny" plastic (like stock) or the more dull plastic. Later.

Nice looking quad! I really like the Maier plastics. It is good to know that they are heavier and stiffer than stock. I was always worried that, for the price, they would be cheap and flimsy. Both I and 660BigDaddy have the same red graphics on our black raptors. It looks like it was made just for the black plastic.

With your blue frame I would think that the blue N-Style graphics would have looked really sweet with the silver plastic. It has the same pattern as the red graphics. That would have saved you from having to do the powdercoating.

If you do go with the powdercoating, I think that red or silver would look killer. JMHO.

looks cool to me....but like RR1 said, if you don't like the combo, maybe get blue/black/white graphics (skins) instead to tie in the silver plastic and blue frame and nets. cheaper and easier than stripping the bike down to powdercoat the frame.
