Not true.
The early models have a different connector than the later models. Sorry I don't recall what years changed but basically the connector is different and the older ones don't have the connection from the parking brake switch to the CDI. I put my 2000 CDI on an '87 bike but had to make each connection with alligator clip wires. It was just to test the CDI. The '87 ran with my 2000 CDI.
