A bunch of 400EX Questions
#1
I am selling my mojave and plan on getting a used 2000 honda 400ex w/dg alloy nerfs, pro taper handlebars, and maxxis razr tires for $3100.00. how does that price sound? the bike is spotless other than some scratches on the plastic. how does this bike compare to a yamaha warrior as far as drag racing and top speed? i know it will get beat in a drag race by a z400, but will they run close with equal riders on the trails? what are some problems to look for when buying these machines used? this will just be a hard trail runner, not a racer. what is the best mid-top end complete exhaust system for this machine(sparks x-6, duncan, CT?). what other things would be good to put into the machine? any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated as well.

$3,100 sounds pretty good for a 2000 400ex.It will take a warrior on a drag race and on tight and twisty trails it will keep up with a z400.Check the swingarm over as some of them tend to crack. It sounds like it has the basic mods on it .I would put some full skid plates and as far as exhaust goes I would go with the FMF Q series with power bomb header.Have fun! The Sparks X6 is geared more for a 400ex with a good deal of motor work. I personally liked the WB E-series on my EX or you could get the Sparks X4.
I also owned a Z400 and you will be just fine on the trails riding with a Z. Handiling means more than HP when your in the twisties. Out in the open, you will want to start doing work on it to keep competative with the other bikes.

I know im gonna be flamed for this post, but the truth has to be spoken....
As far as making a choice between the 400EX and Z400, the suspensions are as close to being the same as well, they're pretty much the same....so dont let that be an issue.
I was in the market for a sport quad and test drove both of the quads, and could tell little difference in power. Dont get me wrong, i did notice a gain when i got on the Z, but nothing as BIG as they claim......youll notice most the power difference in the mid and especially the topend.
Now to the juicy part; i climbed on my bone stock 02 400EX, and my buddy got on his Z, on a hard packed dirt surface the Z only had me by MAYBE two quads (yes we raced more than once)-----to make sure it wasnt the driver we changed quads and i got on the Z, the results were the same........we are both exceptionally good riders.
Im not trying to hate by posting this, i just dont want anymore people to listen to the "hype" that i did, and then be disappointed when you dont run away from the 400EX you just raced.....because i know i surely was upset after having the mindset that i have to get a Z...

Sounds like a good price. For an exhaust go with a white bros cheap-o unless u plan on moding the motor. The pipe will add just enough power to make the bike more enjoyable on the trails. If not rip inot the engine. good luck

I just got rid of my warrior and picked up a 400ex....needless to say, the EX will walk all over the Warrior night and day..well, untill you try to back up.....but thats besides the point...The EX will dust a stock warrior no problem. As far as running with Z400's thats a different storey....My buddy has a brand new stock Z and I race him all the time. My 400EX is piped and Jetted and I have no problem sticking almost dead even with him untill its time to shift into 5th.....then he slowly walks away. As far as keeping up with him on the trails, its not a problem untill we hit the corn field. As far as pipes, everone has their pref. Me personally, if it is a big brand name its good enough for me.

Sounds like a good price - not much to worry about when buying a Honda........check to obvious signs of abuse, though - as always when buying new. The White Bros E-Series is probably the pipe with the best power gains for a stock engine - if you want a good header, you could get the FMF Hi-Flo header like I have - bolts right up to the E-Series. Get the K&N filter/jet kit, too - if it doesn't already have it - that will give you some extra power and is worth the mulah! If you want a little more low end grunt, you can drop a tooth on the front sprocket - you will notice the difference. You will lose some top end, but the low end will be nice. I did then when I started racing MX.........have fun!
