03' Kodiac 450 vs 03' Kodiac 400 - opinions?
#1
Okay - I have narrowed my next ATV purchase to the 03' Kod 450 or 400. I know that the 450 has rear disc, LED display, slightly bigger in the cc's. I need a bike for primarily trail riding and light Utility work. Occasionally in the mud. But I mainly want this bike for short and long trail riding. I live in Arkansas and we don't have really, really steep terrain relatively speaking. I have a price of $5199 for the 450 out the door and a price of $4450 out the door for the 400.
- Are there any differences in the way the bikes handle the trail?
- Do the extra cc's really make that much difference?
- Does the rear disc really help that much?
- Has anyone had any major problems with the Kodiac series?
My concern really lies in the big price difference.
If you have ridden both or know someone who has, please give me your opinion. Thanks in advance for your posts.

I went with the 450 , In my opinion I would spend the little extra now for alot more machine. Allso you got to think of resale.. Who wants a 400 when they can have a 450 for a little more. I up graded my tires first thing. I put on some gators and just love them.. The machine is awesome, thats not to say to 400 isn't as well.. The diff lock has gotten me out of some nice holes allready,( that alone is worth it).. Besides if it doesn't have difflock then it's not a true 4x4 in my opinion..... Hope I could help : )

don't forget the 400's now don't have low range or park. they are torquey enough that it isn't a big deal unless you mud or pull alot. my dad has an 02 kodi 400 and the only problem he has had is a needle and seat and it gets beaten severely. however, his has low and park. if you have the money get the 450, i say.

good point 660 i like my bb it's the first one i've owned so 03 400's are the only one's i've heard bad about but the advantage a 450 has over my bb that i see i like is more cc's and that locker i could have used it a couple of times also the bb is gear low i mean if you ever drove a 5 speed with a granny gear than it's the same thing but i normally never make it out of 2nd or 3rd so it doesn't really bother me i believe the 450's are auto right i dont like that thats about the only thing i dont like about the 450's but if you got the money get the 450

Thanks for all the useful replies. Money is an issue so I may just go with the 400 Kodiac. The ONLY reason why I may not choose the BB is b/c of the low geared tranny.
Thanks alot.
Any other opinions are welcomed.

I am trying to decide between the 400 and the 450 as well. Here are the prices my dealer has quoted me. How do they compair to what you are finding.
400 2wd $3899
400 4wd $4595
450 4wd $5246
This does not include tax or the $59.95 admin/get it out the door fee.
I have road all three and liked all three. I am like a kid in the candy store. It's just hard to decide how much candy to buy

Yamaha guys don't get mad at me about this because the Kodiak quads are great but dont yall agree about a Arctic Cat 400? They have a whole lot of towing capacity on the racks 100 pounds on the front and 200 on the back thats a lot. I understand that you said you are going to do some light utility but if you are looking for work and not fun ( the kodiak is very fun friend has one) you should get the Cat IMO.
