Mechanically un-inclined person needs help
#1
Ok, on a new Kodiak, my dealer said that I should bring it in for the first service and it would cost $189. Though I am not really what you would call "mechanically inclined," I believe that I should be able to change the oil and filter myself and check bolts to make sure they are snug. He also said that the valves would need adjusting. Is this adjustment something that really needs to be done to a new quad or is this just a way of selling an expensive oild change? If this is needed, is this something a novice could do? I just feel $189 is a little high for a service. Any thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks a bunch!

The valves should be adjusted soon after initial breakin, the clearances may become too tight and will cut down on the amount of lubrication your cam lobes get.
One thing I would do is to mark the bolts so you know it was actually done.

Where would these bolts be located? (sorry, like I said, since this is my first quad, I dont know much. This is why I have been concerned that the dealer will take advantage of my lack of experience) Thank you again for your time and help. You dont know how much I appreciate it.

Gosh its been almost 2 years now but I don't think my dealer charged me. They told me to bring it back at about 30 hours. I told them I changed the oil and filter myself because I did purchase the filter from them. They did the valves.
