yamaha blaster top end question
#1
hi, does anybody know how long it takes before you have to rebuild your top end in the blaster to bring the performance back to life. i know this may depend on how heavily you ride, but generally speaking, how long does it take before wear and tear kicks in and you have to take it down and rebuild it. 1, 2, 3 years??
many thanks

Hello ,
If you race you will have to tear it down every 2 weeks if you pratice a couple of times a week and race on week ends. You will see the performance come down in that amout of time.

yeah, but what about if you dont race. I myself do not race competatively. I ride around with my friends most of the day. Some trail riding, jumping, and open field riding. Not really gunning the S*** out of it, just racing around at about a mid to mid-high rmp range most of the time. According to what I do, casual riding around, when should i have to take it down and rebuild it. 2 years? something like that?

It's hard to put a time frame on this but, for the type of riding you do it will probably be a year to a year and a half. Really all I can say is you'll be able to tell when you need a new top-end due to loss of compression, there will also be a slight decrease in power. THere have beeen blasters that were new in '87 that haven't needed a re-build yet so ya never know......

but what happens if you don't take it down after loss of compression? will it damage the engine to continue to run it without taking it down, or will you just keep losing compression and power with no real damage to the engine?

If you run it 'till it seizes, you'll need to do an over bore(.010 or .020 maybe bigger if you really screw it up). You are better off rebuilding the engine when you start to notice a loss of compression. It's the safest and the cheapest way IMHO.
