300 Jetting

2002 300 4x4, looking for a few more ponies!!! How would I jet this for @ 1200' elevation (southern ohio). I havent touched this carb before, and dotn have a whoel lot of experience?

Here is waht I do Know
1) bad cold starts
2) Backfiring going down hills (some say this is normal?)
3) spark plugs seem to be a bit black

How do I fix these problems in terms of adjusting my carb? What and how do I adjust, and do I need a "jet kit"? What size main for my elevation again @1200' (southern ohio).

Just looking to tune her up and squeeze a few more ponies out of her, I know she can do it!! Thanks in advance

Hey Smoke
My 250 is a little sluggish to start, and it does back fire if you are hard on the throttle and then let right of...and going down hills, and my plug is a little dark. I found that when I got it it did none of these things, but it was running to lean, so I richened it up. So now it has these little problems, but the power and top end improved, so you may find that you are setup pretty good, unless you want optimum fuel mileage.
All I did was play with the setting a bit, if all else fails get a manual and set it to factory, but you may be dissapointed with the power loss.

Hope this helps.

i always had the same problems and nobody on here ever had any recommendations

i left mine stock and sold it finally and now savin to get me either a 500 or 650

the more i vist the dealer the more i think the 500 is plenty but have been waiting for them to get a 650

some time it would pop going down hill and sometime not.

i also had problem when climbing steep hills for it to stall.

didnt know how to fix that either.

but when i did route those vent hoses farther up it helped some with the stalling
