Loud ticking noise

Ive got an '00 Arctic Cat 500 4X4 and there is a loud ticking noise comin from the right rear tire. It isnt constant and doesnt seem to happen at any certain time. Ive checked for loose bolts, and nothing visible appears to be causin this. Any help is appreciated.

check the CV joints and the wheel bearings.

i looked at the left front tire and the cv joint boot is broken, but the noise is comin from the right rear. is it possible that this is still the problem?

Maybe, but the boot doesn't have to be torn right now for the CV joint to be bad, or the wheel bearing for that matter. I had on bad wheel bearing once that I couldn't hear, but it would catch every once in a while and snap real loud. CV joints can do the same. You should repair boots asap and not ride with them torn. It's a good way to cause problems down the road.

I agree with Bear. Most probably time for some new wheel bearings. They have to be replaced every so often. And on a bike that age, it's probably time, especially if you do alot of riding through mud and water.

ok, i might sound like an idiot, but oh well. how can you tell for sure if the cv joint is broken?

Ive already raised up the rear end and the wheels dont have play in them like they normally would if there was a bad bearing.

Sounds like it could be the CV jount on that side. Try holding the left rear tire and then turning the right rear tire. See if you can feel the play in the CV joint or the rear diff. If you do not notice anything try spinning the rear tire by hand while its off the ground to see if you can hear the noise.

You might also check you right rear brakes as they could be rattling or clicking.

I have a 2000 model 300 and have had the same noise after checking everything it turned out to be rear brake pad slapping back and forth in caliper. Try putting just a little pressure on foot brake when you hear the noise, and you may need to adjust foot brake tension. Give it a tryl.

I have a 2003 500 and had a similar problem and it turned out to be the auxillary brake. The pads were out of place and one was completly worn out. Replaced all the brake pads and the rear bearings. No more noise.
