99 500 4x4 - no power
I still have good compression and it starts/sounds normal but when you get on it, it just dogs along.....no power at all. I have tried fresh gas, flushed the carb and a few other basics but still no power. This thing is awesome when its running right and I can't figure it out.
Any ideas?

Ironically, this whole thing started when my son was riding it and it quit. We could not get it started and when I checked the plug, it looked fine. I tested the plug and found it to be bad. I put a new one in and it starts fine, just no power.
Here are my thoughts right now.
Carb. - I plan to look into that more closely this weekend. Fuel flow to the carb and out the bowl drain is fine.
Head gasket - I still have good compression but could antifreeze be leaking in and still have good compression?
Could the timing chain have jumped a tooth?

If your timing chain jumped a tooth you would have other issues besides no-power.
If your head gasket was leaking coolant then you would smell that sweet glycol smell out the exhaust while it was running and your coolant would be low.
Carb... Lots of potential here. Clogged high speed jet giving incorrect air fuel mixture, sticking choke, clogged air filter, plugged pick-up screen on fuel valve in tank.
Carb problems can usually be diagnosed from looking at the plug color. Black = running rich too much fuel not enough air. White or very light tan not enough fuel. (you get the idea)
You said you replaced the plug? Did you gap the new plug before installing it?

Yes, I did gap the plug. I ran it around a little last evening but I need to run it more to get an idea what the plug is looking like. I am going to look into the carb this weekend. I am quite sure the choke is fine but I am suspicious of a jet being plugged. With the throttle wide open it sounds fine but RPM's just wont come up. I can shift up to 3rd with no problem but can't climb even a small grade in 3rd.
