99 400 4x4 timing? question.
ok so, beside the fact that it dropped the idler gear for the starter, and the case will never hold a stater idler gear and arctic cat wants 2500.00 for the whole case. I,ve opted to leave this as a "pull start" machine.
That being said, this is what I've done:
replaced the diaphram spring in the carb (it was worn to point of almost breaking) starts up, and idles fine. (with the choke on!) when I give it gas, it falls on its face, with the choke off. with the choke on, i can rev it up but it still doesn't run properly and it smokes alot. because the choke is on. i can only get it to run while manipulating the choke leaver, but is always slightly on. I didn't have the manual at the time. So I just put the piston at tdc with a screwdriver, and leveled the lines on the cam gear to the top of the head. Then backed off the chain tensioner, installed it, then released it. I since got the manual, but it uses the timing marks on the flywheel. after writing this i realized my fault i must recheck the timing, but does anyone have a good way to set the timing?
