Picked up my new '02 Arctic Cat 250 4x4 today and it's a beauty! This is my first new ATV, so I'm pretty impressed with that "new smell" burning off the muffler. It's not 2wd-4wd selectable, but I understand I can get a kit to make it so. Thank you to those who answered my questions on that through email. It does have a lever sticking up out of the front differential that doesn't seem attached to anything. Does anyone know if I could select out of 4wd directly at the differential without installing a cable kit?

Ya that lever out of front diff is 2-4wd option, if you move it toward the rear of the bike 1 position it should go to 2wd.

Gongratulations on the new cat. As far as fabricating some kind of lever to switch from 2-4wd. I thought about this when we got ours and just couldn't come up with a decent idea. It doesn't shift by cable, it works off of a rod. I broke down and spent the $50 for the factory one. Since you don't have the 01 and earlier front dif that is lockable. I don't know that I would worry about putting one on. The 250 steers real easy, so you wouldn't need it for that. But it is fun to see how far you can get in 2wd then switch and drive on out.
The one thing that I would recomend is the rear cv boot gaurds. I don't know why but we had bad luck with tearing boots on the rear of ours before we got the gaurds. Be sure to keep an eye on the boots, if you tear one get it fixed as soon as possible. This is why I shyed away from the 500i. I also think that the gear indicator lights would be nice too. I miss them every time I ride the 250. I also put a hour meter on ours so I could keep track of when to service it. It is ridden by my 10 year old son so this helps out a lot. I change the oil every 25 hours, it comes around quick with him riding it.

HuntR
Glad to hear you got the 250, it won't disappoint you. What dealer did you get it at and how did they treat you?

Thanks all!

I am impressed with the machine; the dealer, well...

He actually gave me my money back because I declined to watch the safety video. I can appreciate an emphasis on safety, I'm fairly safety conscious myself, but I had to go to work and didn't have time. I had to take a vacation day off from work and go back and agree to watch the video before he would sell it to me. I was not impressed, this is America. I can appreciate being urged to watch the video, but not coerced. I would have signed a statement to cover any liability concerns on his part, but they were quite clueless as to the rights of Americans.

The machine I'm impressed with, but not the dealer.

I guess I would have disagree and say that your dealer is well aware of the rights of Americans, especially that too-often used one - the right to sue. Face it, in the litigeous society we live in where people sue for the stupidist, most trivial things, someone who sells vehicles like these can't be too careful. I had to sign a waiver and wear a helmet when I test drove mine - and that makes sense to me.

Who knows, maybe if he had a form that a lawyer had said would clear him of all liability, he may have had you sign it. But he would have had to pay a lawyer to draw it up, which would not be cheap. I bet its just cheaper for him to do what he did - put the sale on hold until he could fulfil his legal obligations. That way, no lawyers involved... and wouldn't we all like that?

Good luck with the new quad!

The dealer I bought mine from never said a word about a video. I did get a free safety video game (it was given to a friend). It sounds a little pushy to force someone to watch a video. Hell if HuntR was to get hurt he still could sue (given the right lawyer). I don't like being told to do something, package all the stuff up and give it to me. Later after the new wheeler is home safe and sound then maybe I'd watch it.
