Those of you who have a 500i, when you take off in 2nd gear from fairly low speed, does your motor make a knocking sound... nothing really loud or nasty sounding, just like a spark knock or something similar...

Most engines will make a knocking sound if you start off in too high of a gear. It's normal and nothing to worry about. Even a standard car will knock if you pull away in too high of a gear.

The 400i that I had did not...and the other guys that I ride with dont seem to have it happen to them... I was just wondering if i was crazy... Thanks for the reply...

Yes, it happens to mine. You can hear it even louder if your in third. When you hear it, just let off the gas and shift.

This exact same sound was on my 98 Quadrunner and its on my 500i too. Its a characteristic of the motor. Don't worry about it. Actually I heard an explanation about this somewhere on these forums before.

Thanks...I was wondering if any of the zuki motors did it as well. Like you said it must be a characteristic of the motor... Thanks to all..

My 375 does that as well if there's load on the drivetrain and I punch the throttle. Call me crazy, but I've found that by putting higher octane gas in, it seems to help the situation.

That tapping sound you hear at low RPM's is the compression release cam. It's nothing to worry about.
