Guys, I was just given a 2000 Artic Cat 500cc 4wd manual atv. My friends father bought it with the intention of using it to hunt with and had a stroke a week later. So, my friend had no use for it so he gave it to me. It is like new with only 75 miles on it so I guess you can say I got a heck of a deal.

But, there is no manual for the thing! My first question is the gas mixture. Is this a 2 stroke engine that requires a gas/oil mixture? If so, what is that ratio?

If not, then what gas is best (regular unleaded or super etc?).

Lastly, for now anyways, since this thing has been sitting for the past year is there anything I need to do before I really start riding it? It fired up the first time I turned it over and idled like a dream. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hi Griz!

First off all Arctic Cat ATV's are 4 strokes (snowmobiles are another matter) so don't mix any oil with your gas, I use plain ole regular unleaded gas and have real good luck. If I were you I'd look the ATV over real good to see if anything is broken (safety reasons) or what may look like needs attention but with only 75 miles on it I doubt there is anything damaged or wrong with it other than maybe draining the old gas out and changing the engine oil and filter. If it makes you feel better you could have a dealer look it over for you but I don't think that is necessary.

Good luck with your new Cat!!

Griz 500cat will be a four stroke no oil mixture is required use reg gas. things to do before riding after machine has sat for that long
1. change all fluids(gas,oil,diff.ect.)
2. drain float bowl in carb
3. check battery for full charge and level
4. tire pressure
If it only has 75 miles every thing should be good the main thing is changing the fluids. have fun

griswold take off the set, and on the bottom of the set at the rear there is a slit in the plastic, you should find a manual in a plastic bag. It should tell you do and what to check.

If you can't find a manual let me know I may have one laying around that I could send you. If you haven't rode an ATV before and have no friends that ride I would strongly suggest taking a ATV safty course. These machines are big and heavy and can get you into trouble if you don't know what you are doing. It will only make your ownership better. If you have some buddys that ride get them to show some of the basics and take you on a ride. Enjoy the new Cat, let me know about the manual.
