300ex Won't turn over
 

okay yall,

i just bought a 2005 300ex. The thing won't turn over when you try to start it. It just clicks around the solenoid. ( i think) I've got a new battery, but sometimes it will start to turn over after ive unsucessfully popped the clutch. Other than that, everythng is great. I've tried whacking the started with a hammer and i don't guess it hung. I REALLLLLLLLLLLY dont want to take it to Honda because they charge $69 an hour. :huh::(:mad::offtopic:

have you taken the starter off and checked it some times the brushes stick if they sit.

First off you need to know if the battery's new. If bought new, take it back and get another it could be defective. Make sure you add the proper levels of fluid in each cell , give it time to fume and top it off before capping and charging it. Also when charging make sure to slowly charge with a 2 volt setup or trickle charger. Second take the handle end of a large screwdriver and beet on the solenoid and starter a little they tend to get stuck. Check all your connections are tight and corrosion / rust free (all of them from your grounds to your starter, solenoid and battery. If all is prime and thoroughly passed. Get a new starter, solenoid and battery.

If it dosn't turn over then your on a whole different level. Hope thats all it is...

If you say it almost starts on a drift pull /push start be sure by chaining it behind a buddy's car and dropp it in second, play with it until it starts. Solenoid wouldn't effect its start by pull. This would solve a lot just knowing it will run and maintain running.

Well, I've been riding it and everthing is fine, I just roll it down a hill and pop the clutch. I really don't want to jump in this real fast and go buy a lot of stuff to..

I've cleaned the connections and double checked the battrey.Was charged on trickle charge and i'm pretty sure its fine cause the old one did the same. I was wondering if i could somehow kind of jump it straight to the battrey?

And a few times when it didn't start when i popped the clutch I hit the start button and it barely started to crank over maybe 2 times(then it slowwwwwed to a stop) :lmao:

I guess if theres no more suggestions i'll look into parts... soon...

On the 400ex there was a way to bridge the solenoid with a screwdrivver but that was long ago. Cant explain it ide have to do it again just to remember.


Some one should know what im talking about.

i think im going to try to jump it directly to the starter, if it turns over, i guess it may be solenoid.. :huh:

yea its the starter i took a screwdriver and bridged the posts things togather and didn't turn over so the shop thinks its the brushes.
but one thing

i can't get the starter off there are 2 mounting bolts in the back of the starter, took those off, and there are 2 long ones on the front of the starter, i can only get to one of them and i can feel the other one but no way to get to it.. any ideas?

and secondly, theres a black cable attached to the side of the starter i cant get off, looks as if it should pop right off but i cant get it to..

any ideas folks?

A service manual is a must have if you're going to be doing your own mechanical work.

If solenoid clicks, tap starter with small hammer.
 

Old post, but still replying to help future 300 owners. If the solenoid clicks, but it won't turn over, it's usually the brushes on the starter getting fuzzed over after a long winter. Tap the starter, located on LEFT side, top, behind reverse lever (red colored handle usually). Worked for us on 5/27/17.
