This week we tackle why someone's quad went away a smooth operator but came out a sputtering spud:

As the old saying goes, prevention is the best medicine. Treat your fresh gas before storage to avoid having the problem in the first place. A double dose of Sta-Bil, or a combination of Sta-Bil and Sea Foam, have always worked great for me. My ATV has the same gas in it for half a year, from September until March, and never sputters.

Or if you're not going to ride the machine in winter, at least go out and start it up every couple weeks and let it sit and idle for a few minutes. That also keeps the battery from losing charge as well. I don't ride much in cold weather but it always seems like there are a few days in winter when the temps rise enough that I want to get out and ride. Around here, it seems winter is never going to end, just snowed a little Sunday night but warmed up enough Monday to melt it all. Still way below normal temps. Should be upper 60's to around 70F normally and its still in the 50's for highs. Looks like it will back down in the 40's for highs next weekend so once again marginal weather upcoming.

I only started mine once this past winter to charge the battery, but I waited too long and had to pull start it. Because of the way it was parked I stood on the left floorboard and knelt on the seat, then reached over and pulled it with my (bad) right arm. In the past when I pull started it I think it took 2 pulls. This time it almost started on the third pull but needed one more. I came back in the house and heard it die when I took my coat off. But after only running about 1/2 minute, it was charged enough to key start it. I let it run about 20 minutes after that.
