Have him bring a spare spark plug with him, for his next ride. When it dies, quickly pull the spark plug cap, hook up the spare plug and check for spark. This will quickly let him know if its gas or spark.
If theres no spark, then it could be the cdi, or even the stator. Sometimes the wiring on the stator gets brittle with age, and the heat expands it enough when hot, to break the conntinuity.
You interested in some cold weather riding?

I had this type of thing happen to me and it was my petcock, I removed the little bowl on the bottom let the tank drain, sprayed some carb cleaner up in the petcock, and re flushed the tank iwth gas before refilling. you might want to ty running the trike on reserve and see if it does it then.

a better idea is when it quits carefully remove the hose at the petcock, with something to catch the fuel and see if gas pours out. be careful becuase I'm sure there could be a chance of fire doing this, I am not liable.

It could be the stator my 200x had a similar problem .
Check it for continunity with a multi meter when its cold, it might be fine then but when it warms up it might give you a bad reading .

Check the stator wire lead, for possible shorting to ground. My trike had the stator lead too close to the flywheel, which wore down the insulation and intermittently shorted to ground. An easy fix once I found the problem. Yes, I had to open up the flywheel side of the motor(easy enough to do).

Default same problem

I can ride for about 10 minutes then it stalls and won't restart unless I disconnect the wire to the reverse lockout switch on the block. If I tap the wire to the switch a couple times it will start up again but will stall unless I keep making and breaking the connection. I changed the switch, the coil, some box under the seat that makes a clicking sound when I connect the wire too. Nothing seems to work. Anybody got any ideas out there?
