Default need help. wont start

I have a 1980 honda 185s. I was playing in the fields one day and hit mud. After that it wouldn't start. We took the magneto/generator apart and it was covered so we cleaned it and put it back together. I rode it up to the air compressor and shut it off. Then it wouldn't start.2 questions. Is there something else that could be the problem? And is there a way to keep the muck off of the magneto?
Thanx for any help.

Should have a gasket on the cover to keep the mud out. Do you have spark?

A very small spark. I believe the gasket was there and in decent shape.
i just think that something else was causing the poblem because it died after only a little amount of time and I wasnt riding it through mud at the time.

Did the coil get wet? What kind of shape is the plug wire in? The plug wire could be leaking and losing spark, especially when wet. I would change it any way, for a few bucks you can buy a new ngk resister cover and a few more bucks for a length of plug wire that you cut to fit.

I used to bury my 185s to the handlebars in the mud and never had anyproblems with mud in the magneto. There should be a gasket, and that gasket should keep the mud out. You may want to get yourself a new gasket and make sure there are no cracks in the cover.
