starting problems plz help
hi, i recenty bought this old atc 110 and am having trouble starting it. The carb is clean and unblocked, the spark plug works fine and I think there is fuel getting in to the cylinder cos it smells of fuel when ever I take the spark plug out. The valves are all set right and the fuel switch is on. The pull start has gone so i have to bump start it. Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks alot.
Thanks alot.

If you have spark, then check compression next.

You are definately going to need to fix the pull starter to check your plug for spark. I dont recommend having someone pull you and you try and see if you have a spark holding the plug next to the frame while moving. All your problems might be the pull starter. I dont remember those babies having a clutch, so pop starting them is next impossible. Get the pull starter fixed and try again.

Thanks for the help so far guys i really appreciate it.
1. Yes, i did manage to check for a spark and there was one, the the plug is quite old and a tiny bit bent at the end, so im going to buy a new one as soon as possible.
2. i may buy a pull start but i wanted to see if the engine worked before i spend money.
3. It was last ran about 4 years ago lol.
4. The engine is definetly compressing.
5. every so often there is a loud clanking sound, but im not sure if it is the engine trying to start or something else.
Hope this helps.
Thanks.

Like you said: get a new spark plug, and looking for spark is not only getting one spark. You need regular and strong enough spark too. And compression is MORE than just a compressing engine. You actually need a good compression. Get the right tool to check it if if still doesnt run after the spark plug. Or the rule of the thumb if your experienced....

How old is that 110? Its posible it has point style ignition, and that could be the issue, if the spark isnt really strong. Could be timing too.
What bothers me is the clanking sound...that doesnt sound good.
I agree with the compression gage...i think the minimun the motor needs to start is around 100 psi or better.

Again thanks for all the help guys.
Just some extra info, im not sure of the year but id guess about 1980-84. And i agree that the clanking sound isnt good lol, it sounds like somethins not meshing properly.
Just to let you know im only a kid and i dont really know much about ATCs, however i could probably get help with the more technical things, sush as checking the engine compression and timings, if this is neccecary.
Thanks.
