Oh gee clayco, I'm the rookie of rookies. I have some friends here who are 20 year ATV enthusiasts and have ridden many of the scores of trails here in Colorado, including backpacking. They said they would try to train me in. They emphasis "try".

There are descriptive guides available of course. I did scout out a trail system an hour south of me on Friday. I discovered the short cut I took will not accommodate my truck and trailer. One lane gravel roads with sharp turns and steep drop offs aren't my cup of tea. I sure wish we could ride our ATVs on these scenic dirt roads, it would be safer than my pickup and trailer with the ATV strapped down on it trying to find a place to park at a trail head.

Tarp shelters, yep, we like them. Can't wait for our upcoming trips.

We've used tarps a couple of times when I was riding and it started raining. We would just pick a place to pull over and dig out a tarp. Everyone holds it up over their heads while someone ties the corners to nearby trees.

We sure could have used one the time a tornado was near by and we suddenly got stuck in a hail storm. That time everyone just hugged a tree to avoid as much hail as possible and hope the tree doesn't get struck by lightning. The only good news was that our helmets took a lot of hits that would have really hurt if we weren't wearing them.

ETA: One person didn't get stuck in the middle of the hail storm. She hauled @$$ to the campground and waited it out in a outhouse.

Tornados near by. Hmm, I think I would have not been out riding. Amazing how many uses there are for tarps.

And, when you do venture out in the areas where a tornado happens to be, and cling to a tree that might get hit by lightning, tarps come in handy for body bags... :D Just kidding.

It was a nice day when we started our ride then the hailstorm popped up. After the ride when we were back at camp we heard on the radio about the tornado that went by. If we knew ahead of time we wouldn't have been out riding.

My back has been so screwed up for the last month that I didn't go riding with my friends Memorial Day weekend. I miss the camaraderie, campfires, and riding. Hopefully I'll be able to ride for a week or two for Independence Day vacation. Until then I'm looking forward to seeing more pics and videos.

Looks like a blast!

This thread is worth the subscription just to admire the photos. Someone out there is very good with a camera.

Maybe these ATV adventures are similar to backpacking on a horse in the old days. In several ways the ATV replaced the horse on the ranch especially. Poor horse, obsoleted by modern technology.

Looking forward to your travel escapades in this thread.

David
