Brand new to ATV's what to buy? Honda, Polaris....Ect
Hey Folks to introduce myself. I am Dennis Kasprzak 20 years old from Roy, UT. After nearly a year of my neighbors bugging me to buy, I am out tomorrow to purchase. My father in law is a well educated man, and bought a polaris 500 sportsman hunting edition. I am looking for a basic rig to start, some folks here have seemed anti polaris due to maintenance. I have also seen many pro Honda's in the forums. I am going to be using this a supplement to my Ford Bronco to scout trails, see sig. below, and in utah we have all trails imaginable. Second, is 500 to much quad for a beginner. I am a 6 ft 210 lb man, but from a few shops so far they were telling me 350, 400's would be pleanty. Also looking to plow our wonderful utah snow, currently 3 and 1/2 feet at my porch. Thanks to all, look forward to responses.

Your father in law is indeed an educated man. The 500 sp is a great all around machine. The ground clearance for scouting trails. As for the 350/400 being plenty, for a time it may be but as you get into it the 500 will be more to your liking. As for 3.5 feet of snow I DESPISE YOU PEOPLE!!!, just rub it in as we flatlanders just wish for sledding snow. Anyway no atv plow will move 3.5' of snow the plow blades are only like maybe 1.5 feet tall if that. Mine works great for these 6-8" dustings 4 trips down the drive and done and looking for more. As for honda they are a decent machine but for me did not have the features to suit my needs. Gf's son in law has one and he catches heck about it getting hung up rather often on rocks or in grooves from other machines.

Welcome to the forum Dennis Kasprzak , The 500 would be perfect for you, if you go smaller you'll always wonder if you should've gone bigger, so I say if you can afford it then do large, you won't regret it Good luck.

Hi Dennis,
I have the 2004.5 SP500 with a plow and a winch. I love the power and the AWD. The feature I really like on the machine is the engine braking. We get approx storms that drop up to 6-10" of snow at a time. If you get 3.5 feet youll just have to plow multiple times. Ill tell you this, it beats shoveling or snow blowing. At times I have to race my wife home to see who is going to do the plowing. Youll have a lot of fun. Good luck and welcome to the forum. |

i would stay with at least a 500cc bike and since it will probably most likely be an auto it won't be too much for you, i'm only 15 turning 16 next month and i had a Grizzly 600 and i hated it compared to the power of my little 250R's. now if you were talking about a LT500R quadzilla to start out on then that wouldn't be too great of a quad for you being as it's a 2 stroke that will foul plugs easier and it being a manual clutch they take a little time to get used to. also on the LT500R and as for all 2 stroke manuals(Banshee,250R, whatever) the powerbands on them are so much different than the 4 strokes. like when you would hit 2nd or 3rd on a LT500R, it feels like nitrous injection only without the nitrous. i would go with either Polaris or Kawasaki's 700 Prarie since it features 4 wheel lock i'm pretty sure of. to me Yamaha needs to make a twin cylinder utility, they are all so worried about being the first ones to come out with new sport quads, but they forget about people that want a new utility. just my $0.02 cents though.

Don't get any Polaris! They are totally contrived. There just isn't much about them that is logical, compared to Honda, Yamaha, or Suzuki.
I like the Ranchers because they are small, light, and agile. However, if you are plowing snow or doing heavy work, a 350 is probably going to be to small. Maybe take a look at the Rubicon. |

Thanks So much for all of the replies thus far, I think I have decided on the Bombedier Quest 500 or 650, the local dealerships around here have been great thus far at discussing all the pros and cons, and Bombedier seems to have the best warranty 3 years with the special they are running and at over 1000$ off of the msrp, I think this is the best deal, the rear suspension seems to be up to the task, and so far from what I have heard the tranny belt will hold up better in this model than in a polaris. Please keep the comments comming and let me know what you think of this.
thanks Dennis |
