As far as what goes wrong; Only thing I have done to mine, is put in a Hinson clutch basket, when I replaced the clutch plates. Read some where that the stock basket lacked enough openings to move oil decently. Which can cause your clutch to live a shorter life. After comparing stock to the Hinson unit. I have to agree.

I would say it comes down to whether or not you prefer 2-strokes or 4-strokes. I own the R, and honestly the only probelm i've had with it was solved by regapping the spark plug. I think some people may over exaggerate the mainenance required for the R. The R is a lot of fun to ride, i personally love the 2-stroke power band, so i would say go for the R. Plus if you do it will be somewhat unique, not everyone will have one.
I almost forgot to mention. They are fast!!

If you can get all of the "bugs" worked out of the 250R it can be an extremely reliable ride.....just maintain it! Premix your oil correctly, properly jet the carb, clean the airfilter frequently, change the tranny oil frequently, and watch your coolant. It will be reliable if you take care of it. The powerplant in my R was bulletproof even before I completely overhauled the engine. My bike fires first kick every time, not too bad considering it is older than a lot of the people on these forumns!

I would go with the Z it is really fast and responds very well to mods. Im not much of a honda fan and have never seen a 250r so i cant speak for it. But i've heard that the Z does a great job on track. doug gust races 1. Get an '05 or '06 they have a 37mm carb opposed to the '04 which has a 36mm carb i've heard there is a big difference.
