Default Anybody have experience with dual-sport bikes?

I know this is an atv forum, but I don't know of any dirtbike forums, and I know some guys on her are into the bikes. I've been seriously considering buying a dual-sport dirtbike to play around on instead of trading in my car on a nicer one like I was originally planning on.

Does anybody have any experience with them? I've been looking around and i'm pretty sure i'm getting one, I was just wondering how much power is really necessary on one to maintain highway speeds without being revved out the whole time. I've checked out all the major manufacturers and the kawasaki 250 really caught my eye, i'm just worried that if I take it out on the main road I won't be able to keep up with traffic without having the engine at high rpm the whole time. I never rode any dirtbikes except a cr50, so I don't have anything to compare power to. Any suggestions/comments would be appreciated.

There is a dual-sport forum on this site. Lots of other forums as well. Mostly dirt bike oriented, but the quad forums are ok too:

If you are going to ride 55 + mph on the highway, get a big 4 stroke. They are more top heavy and sit higher but the extra grunt will be greatly appreciated.

Like Reconranger said, thumpertalk.com is a great site for dirtbike information, check them out.

I recomend the KLX400 or DRZ400 (they are the same like the Z400 and KFX400). They are nimble for a dual sport bike which IMO makes them the best buy for on and off road use. They have good power, you wouldn't have any problem keeping up with the flow of traffic, and they are VERY reliable to boot.

Also, there is a lot of aftermarket support so you can make the bike into what ever you want down the road.

Just get a Utility quad instead of a bike. They keep up with traffic just fine!! lol

I have a 250kawi, and highway riding isnt much fun. Its really stressed to go 65, and because its so lightweight and has a higher center of gravity vs a street bike...the side winds arent much fun either.
Decide how much dirt riding youll really do, and if it isnt very much, get a street bike. The semi knobby tires arent the best for traction especially when the going is wet, on pavement.
Mine regularly gets 95 mpg,so I cant complain about that.
If you really want a dual sport, and ride alot of pavement, look for 400cc or bigger.

I'm pretty sure when I get a bike it'll be a dual sport, one of the main reasons I want one is so I don't have to borrow my dad's durango and spend half an hour getting everything ready to take my warrior only a couple miles down the road to go riding, i'd keep the warrior for the long rides, and have the bike for playing around locally. I guess i'll just wait and see what pops up at my local shop, he gets some dual sports in from time to time.

I think the bike idea will be put on hold for now though, because one of my buddies has to sell his 99 mustang, and for $4000 it's hard to pass up on the offer when i've been driving a 93 escort for the last 3 years (since I wrecked my first stang)

Thanks for the suggestions guys

I ran a Suzuki 650 for quite a few years. Though it has ample power for extended freeway rides, it is still tall on semi-knobbies, so it also blows around. It was also quite the beast off road. Just too heavy, and manhandling it around a trail really takes it out of you.

If I were to go out and buy one right now, it would probably be the 400 Suzuki...

Instead of the Mustang, maybe you should kick around getting a pickup and ramp?

I dunno what i'm going to do now, i'm going to pass on the mustang because somethings not right with the clutch, and the tires are worn out, inspection is due next month and I don't have time to get it all straightened out.

I've thought about getting a truck, but i'm a fast driver and i'd probably roll a truck over, and with gas prices lately it's hard to give up the 30-35 mpg from my escort. I think i'm just going to start putting the money in the bank and wait for something along the lines of an older rx7 or supra, something that's a smaller car and not so terrible on gas.

If you have any ideas for a reliable truck that gets good gas mileage and is fun to drive, can be found in the $3-5k price range, and doesn't look like a redneck beater i'm up for ideas, but I can't come up with anything. The v6 trucks I know of get crappy gas mileage, and the 4 cylinder s10 I drove didn't have enough power for me.

So you are looking for a cheap, fast truck that gets good gas milage? I think those are kind of mutually exclusive.

Maybe a bigger car, something that could pull an ATV trailer? Wouldn't get escort's milage, but not as bad as a truck.
