I go jeeping on a private place thats very wet. We take atvs with us. I noticed that the guy on the artic cat get off and takes out a plug underneath his drive belt and lets water out. And then puts it back in to keep debri out. The guy on a honda did not do anything. Should he of done some thing?

belts will work in water the deeper stuff require snorkels on the intake and exhaust.the guy on the ac drains the water out of belt drive so he doesn't "smoke" a belt.the honda has a manual trans so he doesn't have to drain the water out the bad side is if water gets in the trans it can ruin your trans instead of a $40ish belt. if you look in the stuck section you'll see some quads with belt drives and snorkles on it in water and mud up to the handle bars

Your title is a little confusing, because it says belt or gears. Well, the Honda Rubicon and Rincon are neither one of those.

The Foreman 500, Ranchers, and Recon are however geared.....along with all the sport quads.

It was a rancher and i see alot of people puting them in the water. The new ranchers are sweet but i wish they had more clearance. I like to play with gears what are the chances of getting water in trans slim or likely

Most newer belt drives are sealed very well. Ive been in some pretty deep water, and never had water in my belt housing. Like stated, i would much rather have water on my belt, then in my gears rusting them out.
