I recently new to atv's as well. I picked up a used 400ex. So far I've been very happy with it. I appreciate its simplicity and reliability. It already had a couple bolt on mods from the previous owner (pipe, filter, jets) and has enough power to go where I need to go. I had it in the dunes this weekend and never felt underpowered.

This all depends on your price range and which type of ATV you want. So now I ask, what is your price range? Do you want a Sport Quad or a Utility Quad?

Need more info, budget, size/weight, ever rode a quad before?, riding style, preference(ute vs sport), sand...does that mean dunes?

You say "sand riding", but we need to know exactly what that means. If it means So. Calif. (Glamis, Dumont), that is a whole different world than any of the "sand box" places in other parts of the country (where it is relatively flat and all you have to do is drag race). If it means Oregon Dunes, then that can be more like trail riding than what you would find in the desert.

Sand really robs you of horsepower, so ideally you should start with something the is already pretty powerful. Also, weight is your absolute enemy.

Generally, the Z400 is a great choice in the 400 class (it gets fuel injection next year!), and beyond that most any of the 450's (the 450's are very light compared to everything else). I don't personally like the Raptor 700 in the dunes, and absolutely stay away from any of the large heavy machines (Honda 700XX, KFX700, DS650).

If you are really on a budget, you can get by on some other machines like the 400EX.

Now that we got that part out of the way, would you prefer a sport ATV or a utility ATV???

I would get a Z400 as a minimum for your size on sand. Any of the 450's are a good choice, there are a ton of different "flavors" so you can try a few on for size before buying. The 700 Raptor always get good reviews as a sand toy, and if you are just doing straight dune riding, well the Yamaha Banshee is arguably the King. Power is your friend in sand, it is hard to have to much, lol.

If you are that heavy, probably going to be best off with the Raptor 700!
