Well there are a few options there.
One is the Yamaha Wolverine. It isn't really fast (single cylinder 450 from the Kodiak utility ATV, carburated), but is fairly affordable (in your price range), offers 4WD, reliable and IRS.
The Can Am Renegade 500 is the 2nd best (IMO) hybrid utility/sport quads (the Renegade 800 being the best). It offers a lot of power (500 V-Twin with EFI), 4WD, IRS, good reliability, and a factory full 3 year warranty (since you're buying it used it will still probably have 1-2 years remaining depending on what year you buy). The only thing is that they might be slightly out of your price range (there is one for sale near me in Toronto that has 9 hours of use and they are asking $7,000 Canadian for it, however a slightly more used one would be more affordable I hope).
Also there is a Honda Rancher 420 (I think this is the one) that offers a fairly sport ride (manual transmission), however it doesn't come with IRS. It also makes less power than the the Wolverine 450 and of course the Renegade 500.
IMO, I'd look for a nice used Renegade 500, if you can't find one just buy a used Wolverine 450 and put some money into making it faster!

If I was you I would put that $5k down on a new one that you would like. You could get a new Renegade 500 and finance the $3k or so extra over 5 years. Payments would be tiny. ($50-$75)This way you start out with a bike you like and your not always wondering what if. If financing isn't an option then save up until you can afford what you like.

I am partial to the Honda Rancher, because it is more sport than ute, but the new 420AT with IRS, fuel injection, water cooled, and a totally unique transmission....may be out of your price range.
Maybe look for a used Griz 700.

I have to agree with the Rancher 420. It's a great all-around bike. It is a Honda, so reliability is there. It is very agile for a utility, and has enough pep to be fun. There are used 2wd models well within your price range.

Even a good used 500 HO polaris sp is a good choice aswell, this is very dependable and is not slow. A lot of mods available for it and fully independant. I had a 500 in 2004 and loved it just wanted something bigger. A lot better 4x4, liquid cooled and awsome ride. The choice is yours for the money that you have to spend on a atv. There's really no bad one's out there all have something about them that people like and dislike.
