Buying a new quad
Hey all.
New to all this quad stuff.
I had a quad when I was around 11 years old I am now 22.
I know how to use gears and what not but..
Not sure what second hand quad to buy?
450 or a 660c.
My budget is around £1,500 I've seen a lot of good 450 and 660cc quads been put on eBay for around £1,500. But there around 300 miles away from were I live sadly.
Now.. is a Yamaha 450cc a raptor?
Does the 660cc Yamaha quad do around 20-30mph more than the 450cc Yamaha quad?
Thanks.

The 450 is a YFZ. True it turns more rpm to make similar peak hp to the 700, and a bit more than the 660 raptor. Unless you ride it pegged on the limiter, it really isn't stressed that much more, as lighter parts like valves, piston, rod, etc are all used. It is more the short skirt pistons and use of less rings that leads to more frequent rebuilds on the 450 motors. If you are going to do any racing or jumping, I would seriously consider a 450. The improved handling and suspension capabilities are worth the added maintenance in my book. For just general trail riding then any of the Raptors are good choices, with the 70p leading the pack. Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki all have some great sport quad choices as well, with the 400s being about the best trail quads around.
Is there some reason you are stuck on Yamaha? Btw, blue fan boy here, but I own more Hondas than anything else somehow, lol.

You'd be much more likely to find a nice used Raptor 660 in your price range. A 400ex would be another good choice. Not quite as much power but very reliable and easy to maintain. Same goes for the Suzuki Z400 and Kawasaki KFX400 and they have slightly more power than the 400ex. The YFZ 450 will cost a little more usually.

Lol same here man I ride a Yamaha Raptor 700r Limited Edition got it not too long ago. I live blue quads and mine is black so I want to make all the trim blue and put aftermarket parts on like air filter exhaust etc.

Hey man, glad your getting back into riding
If your deciding between a 450 and a 660, for sure go with the 450. The 450 would be a YFZ 450. Raptor 660’s is just older and lower quality versions of the Raptor 700. The 660 wouldn’t last you long and it will have a lot of problems. The 450 is a very good quality, reliable, fast quad. The 450 will go the same speed as the raptor 660, but is much more reliable.
However, the YFZ 450 is more of a track and dunes quad. It works on trails but it has a wide wheel base and low ground clearance. The Raptor 700 is a good quad but that is way to expensive for you. I would suggest you stick with the YFZ 450 and buy that.
Good luck

Ashley, a couple questions for you first. What kind of riding do you do? Will it mainly be on flat ground, or hilly? Do you need a sport machine or a Utility machine? How heavy of a machine do you feel comfortable with? A Yamaha 450 is a sport quad that is extremely fast and powerful. Do you feel your skills are up to it? Most used ones of this model are probably going to be treated roughly and trashed. I have a lot of experience with the old Yamaha Warrior 350, which became the Raptor 350. They are dependable, have decent power and are pretty bulletproof. Lots of them on the market and generally were not raced since they are not competitive with the 450 you are looking at. Unless you intend to race the bike, the YZF450 is just not going to do what you want it to. Being a race machine, it is geared and tuned for certain conditions and riding style that if you are not able to or are unwilling to ride it in the way the machine was made, you may be VERY DISAPPOINTED in its performance.
