Default Buying a used.. but not really used.. ATV.

Hi guys,

First ATV purchase coming up, no small engine experience to speak of. I'm interested in this one, 2007 Polaris Scrambler 500:
https://abbotsford.craigslist.ca/snw/6180138861.html

Spoke with the guy tonight, legit middle aged no-abuse kind of guy. He said that he bought it nearly new, original owner missed the first payment. He's used it literally three times over the years. What kind of troubles could I be getting into by buying something that's sat so much? I'm going to check with him to see how often he fired it up over the years. Winch and plow setup are custom as he said there were no options for the Scrambler.

Is the price right for something that's basically new, but has sat way too much? It's the kind of machine I want, and I appreciate low/gentle use, but coming from an auto service background I know what use-it-or-lose-it means.

With the plow the price seems decent. Battery will probably need to be replaced in the near future. Take it for a ride and see how it feels. The suspension setup is more like a sport quad so it's not as comfortable a ride as the newer Scramblers.

They're asking way too much IMO. No matter how good the condition is it's still 10 years old. KBB says the suggested retail value in excellent condition is $2,820. The plow and winch add a little to that but they're asking over 90% more than what you could expect a dealer to sell it for. If they traded it in to a dealer they could expect to get $1,910 for it in good condition. Excellent condition is worth more. https://www.kbb.com/motorcycles/pola...=4-wheel%20atv

NADA says the MSRP was $6,199 new so it probably cost less than that. The seller should know that after 10 years it's worth less than new. NADA says the average retail is $2,085, way less than half of of what they want for it. 2007 Polaris Scrambler 500 Prices and Values - NADAguides

Seems overpriced to me as well. And don't think middle aged guys don't drive their stuff hard, hehe. It looks good, would look better at $3,500.

The KBB and NADA prices vary by location so it may be worth more where he's at but I still don't think it's worth much more than $3,000.

I'd say I would pass on this one.
