Default Good guide to learn about ATVs?

We own 65 acres of mixed pasture and woods. I generally travel it on foot or on a tractor, but my wife has expressed an interest in having an ATV of some sort. I know noting about them at all and I know that going into a dealership for advice would be pretty dumb. Is there a good guide for newbies or some sort of selection guide we could start with to help us understand what kind of machine would be best for our uses?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Type in your questions on google then start reading! Yep...you have lots of reading to do! One person machine or two? 65 acres is alot of area until you get an atv, it will get around that area quickly....

The first thing you need to do is decide what you want to do with it. If you're going to ride double on an ATV make sure you get a 2-up model. There are only 3 brands that I know of. Arctic Cat, Can-Am, and Polaris. Arctic Cat makes 1 model. Can-Am has 9 counting the 6x6. Polaris has 3 Touring models, plus a 6x6 and the Sportsman X2. The X2 has a passenger seat that folds down so you have more room in the dump-box when you ride alone. It's great for work but the passenger seat isn't as nice and comfy as the Touring models.

with that much land, you'll find a quad very nice, helpful, and fun. As said above you'd either want two utility quads or one two seat utility quad. You can google any questions you have and a guide for beginners but if you find one it might be to generic. For a 2-up id personally suggest a Cam-Am but they all work well.

I suspect she will be the only one using it. I have the tractor.

How much of a difference does 4wd make for an ATV? I see a number of used 2wd units on Craigslist and that makes me wonder if they are being sold by people who decide they want 4wd.

Big differences between 2wd and 4wd, and yes you are probably correct in your thinking. It wont be long before you will want one along with your wife, that tractor is gonna be way to slow to keep up with the wife! You might consider a side x side for both of you. My wife and I ea had a quad, but she was not keen on riding alone. Sold both and bought a SxS and love it! So much more usefull as a workhorse around our property and we are together when we trail ride.

If you have a 2WD ATV there may be times you wish it was 4WD. But if you have a 4WD and wish it was 2WD, just push a button to turn off the 4x4. It's better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. Most 2WD ATVs are sport models that are better for fast trail riding and racing, and 4x4s are good for most other things.
