What's too big for a 10yo?

I started out looking at 125cc Chinese ATVs and they just looked too small.. I then started looking at 150cc units. Problem with that was the reliability factor. I can turn a wrench, but how bad is it?

After trying to figure out how much work these Chinese ATVs take to keep running, I ran into seeing a CFMOTO 400 online. Based on the pic I saw of someone standing next to one, it didn't look to big. It got me to look into it a bit and it seems like CFMOTO, even being Chinese, is a decent brand and a company that stands behind their warranty... Plus it's fuel injected.

Now I'm thinking, should I get him the CForce 400? Yes, it's like 3x the cost of a 150cc, but I thinking between the features and better quality, it might be worth it. That is assuming my son can ride it.

What's everyone's thought on getting something this large for a 10yo?

BTW, I was also looking at the Monster 300, but I'm not sure on the quality. Yes it's cheaper than the CFMOTO, but it's hitting all the features I'd like other than not having FI.

Thoughts?

A lot depends on your sons size, if he is a small guy or a big guy is more inportant than size of the engine. As a general idea, many 250 size machines can be rode by avg size kids and even smaller adults. My wife had a Yamaha Bear Tracker 250, fun machine, I rode it more than she did but it was far better than odball machines that you cant get parts for. Many mfgrs made 250 size machines so they are out there, and parts/service is readily availiable

What also comes into play is being able to push the machine off yourself in case of accident or move it enough to get your free... While alot of kids can handle the bigger machine if it tips the extra weight of that machine may be a huge factor on how bad they get hurt.. Remember thats at least a 400lbs plus machine compared to the 150 that is a few lbs lighter... Personally i would not go above a 250=300 and that is still going to be a heavy machine... My 10 year old can drive our 500 no issue but i will still not let her drive it by herself...

I'd stick away from the Chinese quads if you can. Most of those are quite small and "kidsy". As they said above, depends on the size of your kid for both comfort and safty reasons and also depends on what factors your looking for. If you dont mind buying used you could get a yamaha raptor 250, trx 250 (the smaller 4 stroke not race 2 stroke), or small utility quads. Wouldent suggest anything bigger than 250cc or anything smaller than 100cc.

I know I'm a bit late to the party here but the state of Oregon has a free, online safety education course that addresses concerns about sizing of ATVs to kids. It might be some help to you to at least go through that section as it gives some pretty decent guidance in areas you may not have considered. And actually, if you complete the course, Oregon will send you a plastic certified safety education card that is accepted in other states as proof of ATV safety education.

Recently, a friend went riding in Texas and he was stopped and told Texas requires proof of an ATV safety education course before allowed to ride there. Since my friend was from out of state, the Ranger said he must not ride any longer but also directed him to Oregon's online course that is honored in TX.

Takes roughly two hours to complete the course and take the test. Most of it is common sense if you are an experienced rider but might also be good for your kid to take it. It is not just a bunch of inaccurate "nanny state" information. Although I don't live in OR or TX, I went ahead and took the course so I have my card in the event I ever find myself out riding in another state where it is needed. Thank you Oregon.
