Yamaha Blaster or Honda 250ex
#4
We have both. The 250 is based on the Recon which has proven to be bulletproof. The Blaster is a more capable bike than the 250, but our Blaster has not been that reliable. Right now its down for a clutch replacement. The clutch basket literally went to pieces. When we pulled the housing off, there were metal pieces EVERYWHERE! It wore a shift drum out in the first 6 months. The swingarm cracked BAD, right along the welds (tourch was probably to hot and ruined the temper of the metal). The kick starter broke. OK, this bike does get ridden hard. It sees lots of BIG AIR, but so do all our other bikes and we never have a problem with them!!

I'm quite surprised two broke down in 7 months (given they've only been out since january). My wife's 250ex appears to be bullet-proof. Her recon certainly was.
What exactly happened to their quads?
Honda's motors are known to be almost indestructible - sure you don't own stock in yamaha?
thanks,
ogre

Either one will be very dependable if bought NEW, the Ex, well, its a recon and its as solid as they get, BUT, I think it would get old fast? Sure its going to be dependable for years to come, but if you buy NEW a blaster will be just as reliable as long as you dont mod it out. I am not saying this just because I have a blaster, that has nothing to do with it. But its been ridden HARD everywhere, almost every day, to date the only problem I have had was my gas tank vent hose was too long and I had to cut it. They are very very tough little machines and should last for years if you know how to ride a 2stroke and do regular maintance (change the oil, clean the filter, change the plug). The blaster is a "blast" the Ex is a tricked out recon. Im sure the EX is just as reliable, probally more being a 4stroke, but if you buy NEW then reliability will not be an issue. It all comes down to you, what you like, I urge you to go to the dealership and RIDE before you buy, you'll know which is right for you. Good luck.
