I agree with DeniseFrank that you need good boots. And don't try to break in a new pair on a hike. Get them broke in at work or around the neighborhood first. Good boots that fit right and are broken in can make the difference between an enjoyable experience and pure hell. Some good thick boot socks help too.

My hiking excursions are going out the back door to the front sidewalk to my mailbox and back. I really should be walking around the neighborhood or in a shopping mall every day but find it boring. I used to hunt small game when I was younger and did a lot of walking through the woods. Now, nothing.
