Alone in the middle of nowhere, DS won't run...

The vent line runs down the frame on the left side of the radiator. I would check it before you go buy a vented cap. Just unscrew your gas cap and blow into the clear plastic 1/4" (I think) tubing. If it is free flowing your vent is working fine.
I personally don't like the vented caps. I have had my chest hit the tank / bars hard once and knocked me loopy. I would hate to have had my chest hit the nipple on the top of one of those aluminum gas caps. . . not the kind of nipple treatment I am looking for
If the vent line is pinched you will have to take the tank cover off and try to re-wrap it. There must be 20' of vent line there!
I cut mine much shorter then bought an in-line check valve from James Lucky and put it in. Haven't had a problem since (still using the stock gas cap!)

Well I went back out today and tried to start it to see what's going on.
It started up perfect, on the first turn and sounded great...idle'd like usual.
Let it sit there idling for about 1 minute while I got my helmet and gloves to go for a little ride...And then it stalled again...After a few tries I got it started again..but it would not idle and would only run with some throttle. I gave it a few shots of gas to try and clear things in the carb...But once I let go, it stalled...and wouldn't start again...and my battery was starting to die out.
So I pushed in inside my garage angrily...And here I am....wondering.
Oh, and I tried many times to start it and run it with the gas cap off...I don't know where to look for the vent line so I didn't try to blow in it.
This was my day off...supposed to go riding with buddies. Grrrr.
What now?

There is no vent line on the stock cap , its under the tank cover and its not 20 ft. , its more like 6 ft. just cut it shorter and make sure you route it with a loop in it ( to prevent water from collecting in it -like a sink p trap) . Check the battery condition , it sounds almost like a bad batt. If im not mistaken i think the ds's need a batt to run .

The started is turning fine and the lights are working. My battery is going dead because I've been draining it to hell by using the started so much.
Anyway, anybody got any suggestions?

Well, I got caught streatching the truth a little. 6' of vent line is probably about right.
If it did the same thing with the gas cap off you have answered that. . . it isn't the issue.
Pull the carb bowl off and pull the jets out. Take a look at the carb bowl - maybe something is in there clogging things up. Check the jets for debris.
Pull the filter (if direct mount) or the intake piping off and check the operation of the carb slide.
Hook up jumper cables to your bike to your car or something with a strong battery
Eliminate these potential issues then let us know.

Turn off the gas and pull your fuel line off at the carb then turn the gas back on with the line off and check your flow. If you have fuel then hook up the fuel line to the carb and pull the bowl off then turn back on the fuel and check for flow out of the needle valve.

Alright,
you just verified what I had planned to do as my next step.
Ugh I hate taking off the carb....
Also, I drained the float bowl twice since I bought my quad...and both times, there were many little grains of sand or dirt, or garbage in there. There wasn't a whole lot..but enough to make me wonder how it's getting in there...
I then took it apart 2 weeks later...and there was the same amount of crap in the bowl....So I def. need a fuel filter.
Thanks

Well I guess I will say this again. BUY A FUEL FILTER. You are getting sand and crap in the tank from most likely when you are filling up with gas. This all gets in your carb and in your case clogged your pilot jet. So to SOLVE the problem take the float bowl off, take out your pilot jet and blow it out with compressed air. Put it together. Then install a filter on your fuel line...... Might as well dump out the old gas and crud in it and start over with fresh stuff....... I will raise my bet to $5, yes $5..........

Maybe we can figure these things out over the forums (Probably not now that I said something!)
