Default Professional Head Porting

I have ported many heads and usually charge customers $300-$500. I have never lost horsepower after porting, but I can tell you I wouldn't run a $300-$500 port job on any machine of mine! I have seen many heads (ok, let's make that MOST heads) LOSE power after getting ported. There are very few who can truly extract great power in their porting. You can expect to pay $1200 to $1500 for a "professional" job. And just because someone knows how to port one head, doesn't mean they know how to port all heads, although some basic principles are universal. Flow numbers mean very little to "professionals" these days. They only tell part of the story.
Bottom line: yes, I can port. yes, I think I'm good. yes, some people ask me to port their heads and are very pleased. No, I do not run my own porting on my own machines! So if you want to go fast, don't use me or anyone else who says they will do it for cheap. I can get you a head ported by someone who ports NHRA record holding motorcycles and NASCAR heads. And it won't break the bank (we're friends) and it will not loose horsepower ANYWHERE like many of the DS650 dyno charts I've seen by other well known DS650 "specialists". A good porter will not sacrifice the bottom end, in fact, he will increase it!

MERRY CHRISTmas everyone, may God bless you and your families

I got mine done for $185 by a guy who used to be an engine builder for Four Stroke Tech, he has tons of experience and seemed to do an awesome job on my DS. The general rule of thumb "you get what you pay for" is true 9 times out of 10 but there's always that 1. I highly recomend him to my fellow DS riders.

So are you saying even on a built DS650 motor to NOT have it ported is better or??????

Not at all! Sorry I wasn't clear. Porting can and will always help, stock or built motor, if done right. But there is more potential to mess up the head than there is to improve it! Just needs to be someone you KNOW can do a good job on your brand of head (preferrably backed up with dyno numbers or championships!) Don't trust flow numbers by themselves as proof positive of hp gains across the board.
Thanks for asking, I hope I was clearer.

Thanks, Merry Christmas to you too. (everyone else too)

Ron Wood does porting right? They must know how to do it the right way I'm assuming?? Does Eric Oldham do head porting? If so I know he would do it right!

I've seen RW published dyno charts and I've personally seen an actual RW motor's dyno charts on our local dyno. I will say this - he did not fudge is dyno charts- what he advertises is what you get. However, take a look at the power curve if you have one available out of one of the magazines. There is no excuse for being way under horsepowered through the entire lower rpm range. It can't even touch a stock bike. It does make power in the upper rpm range, though not enough for me.
I have dyno runs, back to back, on the same motor, ported verses unported, with power increases EVERYWHERE! and surpassing RW peak numbers. If you go through E.O., you will get one of the top motorcycle porters in the nation to port your head - far better than any I've seen who are actually players in the atv world. The best porters just aren't messing with us unless you have a friendly connection- even then you'll wait while a NHRA head gets done -back of the line! We're small business compared to what they are doing nationally. But, you have mentioned the right name to get this done!
