Where's the Beef?
 

Hi all...
I've been lurking on ATV forums for a while now and find that this one is by far the most helpfull and friendly..... hence the joining.

Background:
I've been shopping around for an ATV for a while now, and have it narrowed it down to a DS or Outlander. I'm 6'3" 300lbs and have no intension of looking like a fat kid riding a smarty, Bombardier's seem to fit me quite well. I have spent alot of time on the inlaws Traxter XT's and enjoyed them emensly although not being able to lean-on or hang-on to (with legs) a gas tank is a little unnerving at times. I'm leaning towards the DSX but I do like the 4WD of the Outlander however it is somewhat underpowered..... which leads me to my question...

Question:
Why is the DS more expensive than the Outlander (MSRP)? The DS is based on a 4 or more year old design, that aside from its size and build quality is much the same as any other sport quad on the market (I'm generalizing). The Outlander has a fair amount of RND, the central ski, suspension, and extra drive wheels and the DS is a chain driven straight axle 2wd.
Is a 650 Rotax that much more expensive than a 400 Rotax?
Or is the DS a niche market quad for Bomber?

Just curious as to what you guys have to say.....
I'll probably end up with some form of both anyway.... my girlfriend/wife and I don't know how to share toys...

and for a 400 from what i hear it is just as fast as the 500SP

the msrp is the same on the DS as the Outlander 400. It is probably more expensive to produce some of the high performance parts on the DS650. Last time I checked, it was the least expensive big bore sport quad on the market. The sport quad market pricing probably drives the msrp more than anything.

There would be a bigger potential market for the Outlander, and it has to be priced to compete with other utes in the same class.
The DS is set to compete with other big bores and sport quads, and as already mentioned, it costs less than the others. That would give them little reason to make it cheaper, if they can.

I think the topic was touched on a couple of times but here it is bluntly: in the Utility market, a buyer has about 40 + options to choose from between all of the manufacturers, so everything is going to be more compeditive. In the big bore sport market, there are three choices, and between those three very few options exist - in fact Bombardier is the only manufacturer that has options that go beyond a mere color change. Before you go and buy something, you should post here with the prices you are being quoted so those quote can be sized up to what some other people recieved.

If it helps your decision any - I almost ordered my DS650 from Precision Power Sports - they are in Canada, near where Lilnotts lives. They started right off the bat with a very compeditive price compared to my local dealers, however after a lot of searching I was able to find the right deal locally, though it came close.

Blackhawk I'll look into the shop you mentioned, its a bit far but they sound good. There is no distance too great for a good deal..

ya i really like precisions, they are good to deal wit, if i had the money i'd go buy a baja x and maybe rev mxz renegade 600ho sdi from them, lol but i don't have nearly that kinda moeny
