Changing oil and stripped threads, need help??

I was changing the oil on my 07' Renegade 800 and when I put the drain plug back and started tightening I noticed that it became very loose. I backed it back out and noticed metal shavings around the bolt. I got my flashlight and looked inside the hole and noticed the threads had stripped out. And the threads on the drain plug did not strip, it was the portion that holds the plug. On a car you can change the oil pan but on this quad it's all part of the engine block.

Has this happened to anyone else??

How is it repaired?

How much does it cost?

If anyone knows please advise.....

Aluminum case vs. steel plug, plug wins every time. Your local bike shop can tap out the hole, insert a steel helicoil, and you'll have steel on steel fitment. Something simple that the manufacturers should do. Greed?

that happened on my 03 DS and the fix was to drill and tap it for a new plug. The only problem is when you drill/tap it you cut into the oil screen that sits above the drain hole (not a HUGE deal...but something to consider). Does the renegade have that screen? But ya go with what Ace said...helicoil, ftw.

Changing oil and stripped threads, need help??

Hey guys,

I finally got it fixed. I went to the dealer after X-Mas to get a quote. The price was 1-hour labor plus parts. They advised they would drill it out, then tap, then put in a plug/or insert and my existing drain plug would screw into that. They put locktight around it the insert and they essentially said it would never come out.

So I opted to have them do it. They put some oil in after the job was done, ran the motor, drained the oil then re-filled with oil again. Also when drilling they used grease to keep the shavings to a minimal.

Anyway it cost me $120.00 bucks. The sad part was I didn't go riding the next day. I could have bought tools myself and did the work but I paid to have it done because I was in a rush. So that was the only bad part.

But thanks for the help....

A buddy told me all they did was helicoil, but the mechanic showed me the insert that went in and I watch then do it. The insert was all one solid piece and there was nothing coiling.

Anyway, thanks again.....

Yep had my local BRP dealer do the same for my 00 DS. He said they installed a brass insert with its own magnet. No more worries about stripping threads.
