Default ds650 newb question - original carb

I am getting a 2001 ds650 tomorrow which runs fine at high rpm and crappy at low. Buddy says it has too small of a carb on it and that I should get an original (stock). After research I think the original is the BSR42 and he thinks it is the TM45. I think the TM45 is an upgrade.

Which carb is correct and which do you recommend? Anywhere I may have a chance at getting a used one?

Thanks,
John

No, it doesn't have the TM45, not sure what it has right now but he said it is too small. It is jetted so it runs fine if you are beating on it but if you would just be putting around it would run poorly and prob foul the plugs.

I am more or less interested in what carb I should be putting on this and whether there is a good source for used parts. Has an aftermarket pipe (whit bros???) but not sure of any other mods. Will be in my possession tomorrow night.

a stock carb with omr carb mods will work good for you. are you sure you don't aready have a stock carb alot of people say it's to small. i would make sure befor buying another . if you post a pict . i can tell you more. as a rule in general a carb that is to small, will run good low to mid. but not on top.

Thanks for responding. I should have it tomorrow night but I think you are on to something. I got this from a buddy who doesn't know much about it but wouldn't lie.

He said that it isn't the stock carb, it is too small and this one doesn't have a choke on it (doesn't seem needed now).

When I rode it the ATV seemed good but I would shift around 5-6k as it seemed like it was under alot of load and lacking power. Saw the tach revs to 10 but didn't notice a redline and it seemed as if power was starting to drop off. Maybe it has some kind of ignition issue... I didn't notice any slugishness at low speeds but I was pretty heavy on the gas. He got it a couple months ago so doesn't know much. Said he had to adjust it 6 jet sizes to get it to run well which seemed odd.

Well I am buying an 2001 Can-am DS650 for $1000. Anything sound wrong where I should be concered about not buying it?

Thanks for your help.

If your revving 10k+ its not stock. Stock is 7700. It might have a Woods CDI which has no limiter and at those RPMS you risk floating a valve if its all OEM.

Don't think Ive heard of anyone going smaller than OEM, but I guess its possible.

The one on the left is the the TM45 and the one on the right is OEM BSR42.

Thanks for the pics. I prob don't have either but am hoping it has one of the two. I don't know that it can rev that high, I was shifting at 5-6 as it seemed as if power was dropping off. Will know more tonight.

Says I may not post attachments (maybe new member rules) but here are a few pics of the one I have:

Buddy was told it was a TM34 but that appears to have a choke also and this doesn't. Either way my plan is to try and find a used carb so I hopefully don't have to spend $500 on a stocker. Any ideas on others that would be a slight upgrade? Right now the only carbs on my search list are BSR42, TM45, and TM48.

Thanks,
John

WOW! I guess there is one out there that would put a smaller carb on it?!?

I miss read your other post about the 10k rev, so you most likely have an OEM CDI.

If you plan to keep it stock I would go with the TM45 or an OMW 46 Lectron if you can find one, if you plan to do a little modding go with the TM48 or and OMW 48 Lectron. Keep in mind that the Polaris Predator uses the same BSR42 as the OEM carb too if you go looking for a stock carb.
