DS won't wheelie...DS the problem or is it me??
I've been trying for days to wheelie my pig. No good results. I'm running a Stage 1...Engine feels and runs fine to me...
Anyway, it will not lift on the 2nd gear...sup with that....I've tried sitting, standing, knee on the seat, foot on the grab bar....everything and tugging, pulling back...It won't lift off the ground for more than 6-10 inches.... I floor the gas on 2nd...and I feel it lags just a split-second before the power comes on strong... I don't like the idea of popping the clutch every time I want to do a wheelie...Seems like that would wear my clutch prematurely... What's wrong? |

Are you back all the way on the seat? if so, it should could right up with a quick tug on the bars and throttle hammer. if not, you're missing some power

Hmmmmm.... something is definately wrong. I can pull wheelies with my "stage half" DS in three gears without using the clutch. That's on dirt, and me in a normal seated position. How is the traction where you're trying to pull these wheelies? I had to start on patches of dead grass to get extra traction when I was first learning how.

It may be time to take your DS to a mechanic to take a look at it. Not your buddies dad or a guy you know down the street but a honest professional mechanic. It seems that you have had some tunability issues with your bike since you bought it, get it looked at by a Bombadier Tech it will be money well spent.

Hold your horsees a minute guys. Don't think that there is anything wrong with the bike, just a little too much power to the ground.
Let me explain.... Not sure what tooth/gearing Tyrespinner is running, buy I think that the problem is not in the power but in the traction department. Take my bike for example. I just changed to the 14 tooth front gear and the bike actually became heavier in the front. One would think that with more gearing, the front would come up easier. Problem is that when a bike puts out a "BUT LOAD" of torque the wheels just spin easier. Went back to the 16 stock wanting to see the difference and the darn thing came off the ground WAY EASY. Now I'm not suggesting that the 16 is the way to go for everyone, just my results. Neighbor has a 400EX with a couple of mods, namely a 417kit. He felt that he was undergeared way to much and that he didn't have enough top end for his taste. He went to a taller (more tooth) front sprocket and the darn thing cant keep the wheels down. I road his bike before and after. Mine pulls the front end up pretty easy w/the 16 but his is down right scary! EVEN WITH MY BIG A$$ ON IT. Bottom line..... our bikes aren't the wheelie machines that the Raptors are, to say the least like the new 400's are. But remember, when riding most of the times it's a good thing. Except for going through the real tight stuff and over obstacles, a wheelie machine can be a very negative attribute. If the tight stuff is your bag, then you might have the wrong machine. I'm sure that many might try to make the argument that the DS is perfectly at home in the tight stuff. Guys, let's concede the fact that they are Desert Machines First, Duners an extremely close Second, and Big Quads more than anything. Tyrespinner, are you a little guy? You might want to go to a 17 front sprocket.... Let us know what happens. Then again, I couldn't even figure out why my throttle was sticking Let us know what your results are. Might even be able to borrow someones 17 for the testing process. What is your current front sprocket? |

My first real experience with a wheelie machine was a 400EX with paddles and smoothies on the front. It was fun except for going up hills, and almost no amount of keeping your weight to the front would keep the front end down on steep hills. It would wheelie with the right amount of English on the flats, but it was a PITA to keep it pointed straight going up hills. Back out of the power, and you wouldn't make it up the hill, stay in it and you wheelie all the way up. Then I rode a Raptor, I frickin hated it. Wanted to wheelie ALL the time. I'm anxious to get some seat time on a DS, since they don't tend to wheelie as much.

well if wheelies are your thing the ds is a little hard to get acustom to the balance point is rather far back, well big daddy is right the gearing is part of it the way mine is set i probably couldn't get a wheelie in first if i went over a bump just blows the tires out, and this is something you will have to determine for your self. have you set your sag on the rear shock? i like to set mine more to the 2" of sag thus the power startes to pull the front up easier, not as good of a set up for the whoops as some, what gearing are you running? you'll need to practice the wheelies also, my wife isn't as good as she wants to be, but her machine works fine, but she gets better every time we go out. makes her mad when she has a hard time on hers and then i jump on and wheelie about as far as i want, this is another area i think the 45 is much better than the stock carb. i wouldn't let this get to you just practice a lot and then you will start to feel the balance point and when to hit the throttle

Yea but how can I practice if the pig won't even lift more than 10" off the ground with my 165 lbs. ass on the grab bar and the throttle to the pin on 2nd gear. I've ridden many 400ex's and I had no problem lifting them and riding them pretty frickin far....But this seems hopeless...
The only way I can find out what sprockets I have is by counting the teeth right?...grrr...too bad the guy who had it didn't know $h|t about what was on it..(He wasn't the one who modded it). Also, I'm running Sur Traks (same thread as Bear Claws, pretty much a mud tire) although they are slightly warn...And I don't think they are spinning when I hammer it on 2nd...I guess I could try it on pavement... Also, my rear shock's sag is at about 4-5 inches (measured from full extension when u lift up on the grab bar, to when I'm sitting on it). I know this is a lot of sag but the rear feels tight and it was way more when I first got the quad. I don't think I have many more threads to go on the preload adjustment...Using stock shocks.. |

If you want to turn the DS into a wheelie machine get a -1 inch swing arm.
